One of my all time favourites, which I am surprised more people don't know of, is the Belgian 1990s band Les Vice Barons. "Steel Blue Moods" is probably their best - not every track is pure surf but I really don't care. I think back in the 90s a lot of what we called surf was fuzzier (in every sense) than it is today. The Apemen were another great high volume surf band from the 90s from nearby - Tilburg in the Netherlands. |

After seeing this, I sent a message to Bevel Emboss via Facebook and he doesn't have any copies for sale. He did send this link As far as a second album, he said he has songs written but budget and time are his constraints. Ted from Deep Eddy doesn't have any more 'Bongo King' CDs and said he isn't in touch with the band members any longer. However, he is headed to a record sale soon and said he'd look for a few copies (how ironic!). If you see them on his ebay, we'll know he found them. —Matthew |

One of my faviest 90s surf bands were Portland,OR's 'The Galaxy Trio'. Great playing and Jim Crabbe's guitar tone was fantastic! Jim moved to LA for a few years and we worked together at the Rhino Records store for a bit. He'd abandoned he surf style in favor of a more Tom Petty /American pop style by then , but the Galaxy Trio stuff was really inspiring ! I think he's back in Portland now?? Glad to see the participation - Thanks Y'all! @Matthew, thanks for reaching out to folks re: Bevel Emboss & Ted/Deep Eddy! Cool to get turned onto 'new to me/you' music, WAAAYY cooler if you can actually still get it! To keep some momentum going, I offer The Space Rangers - Ready to Take Off! As I recall, Whorehay (Radio Free Bakersfield and formerly active member here) was hip to this album released in 2007 - playing a few cuts from these guys before they got much steam here and eventually playing at the 3rd SG101 convention in 2010 (@Gellert - as did your nomination of Ryan & the boys; Secret Samurai, and @chiba, Ivan & The Space Cossacks (Reunion) - check that link for some footage of them too!!). The Space Rangers also made a return trip to the US the next year for several east coast gig's where I was fortunate to see them less than 30 minutes from home at the Instro Summit. Always a treat to hear traveling surf bands, more so when they've come from 1000's of miles away - from Germany in this case. Their star shone bright but flickered into the past fairly quickly too. IIRC, Muck wrote a lot of the album inspired by his mother's passing (or to cope with?). They all seemed to go different directions after the couple of big-year's out. Anyhow, Check them out.... again, or for the first time! Digitally available for purchase on iTunes/Apple Music and Amazon Music PS - Here's a nice walk down memory lane from Ivan's review of the album. And more 2010 SG101 Convention memories, photo's/links and whatnot here. —Fady El Mirage @ ReverbNation |

The Penetrators - a very good debut, "the Kings of the High Speed Weekend", and an absolutely inspired second album, "Locked and Loaded". —Ivan |

Bless your heart, Ivan! The Penetrators absolutely need to be on this list of the absolute best surf music, and you adding them speaks volumes. Thank you very much! The Penetrators are the foundational bedrock of southern surf music and the very much still active Atlanta surf music scene. I know they have a special place in your heart, Ivan. Here is blast from the past of you covering "The Southern Surf Syndicate Theme" and a '96 clip of the band in action from Ferenc "Frankiepoolboy" Dobronyi. Here is Ferenc's intro to the video from YouTube: — -Tim |
