I'm always curious to see what effects folks are using beyond reverb ... because, DUH! REVERB! Smile Show off your surfboards and talk about how you chose what you use.

I got the Valco Five-O almost on a whim and thought it would be useful (it is!). Everybody needs a tuner, and I found a good deal on the EB vol/tuner pedal. The Spark is just a clean boost I had stashed away, as was the BOSS Octave (I keep the 1 Oct down blended in a bit and 2 Oct down all the way off). The JHS Series 3 Chorus is a new pedal, not sure if I like it enough to keep it or not, but it's doing the trick for now. The board itself is a Pedaltrain Classic Jr with a Truetone power supply mounted underneath. The big difference between this and my previous boards was that I planned this one out and tried to keep it as neat as possible with cable stays and what-not.

Project: MAYHEM by Hypersonic Secret now available!

This is a current “home board”, live board looks different with Sonic Blue Twanger as a tone shaper before the overdrive, but now I play only home or in studio(

Spaghetti Western Fuzz for fuzzy 60’s stuff, usually used together with overdrive after it, sounds tighter
One Control Cranberry Overdrive - light transparent overdrive for a little dirt
Zoom MS50 for experiments with Delays and Echos, Flanger, Chorus, Rotary Speaker and other funny stuff
WayHuge Aquapuss delay is used most of the time with reverb on subtle settings
Marshall Vibratrem - my favorite tremolo for almost 20 years
SurfyBear Compact or Classic depending on my mood

Surely the important part of “home board” is Digitech Trio, for making a three piece band with me)

VFE Rocket parametric eq - Awesome eq that really opens up smaller amps, particularly those with only a tone knob. Also has a boost.

Lovepedal Vibronaut photocell vibrato - All-analog photocell vibe. Standard rate + depth, but has control set I have not seen on vibes: bass and treble. Make the effect more usable with different pickups. Also has a volume control to even out perceived volume loss and three more internal trim pots for fine-tuning gain and more. Huge feature set for a pedal smaller than an MXR.

ZVEX Super Ringtone - Ring modulation is my favorite effect and I splurged to have this one-off custom made. I did the original artwork and ZVEX reproduced it perfectly! I also had it built with an external wet/dry mix knob. Like most ring modulators when the speed is set really low it produces a very nice tremolo. This one is really warm and fully surf worthy. This has 16 separate ring mods and the left switch can be set to select the next one, each set to a different speed. With the wet/dry knob I can use the ring mod or tremolo very subtly. This functions as a depth control for tremolo and makes ring mod much more usable since it does not have to overwhelm.

Matthews Cosmonaut delay + reverb - An analog-voice delay and two different reverbs any combination of which can be assigned to two channels. Top footswitch toggle between the two channels. I do not use the delays much as I almost always have amp or outboard spring reverb on. I usually have both channels set to different delay settings.

footswitch - Passive switch. Unmarked (left) switch is for outboard reverb tank for super splash. Linked (black) switches control amp tube tremolo and reverb

The board is only 8x20” but packs a plethora of options, particularly for a ‘surf’ board.

Custom built my own design.
2 levels with upper level hinged to access connections and power supplies.
For my Surf twang I use the Strymon Blue Sky reverb and the El Capistan.
The Depths is a nice Rotary Vibe as well as the Vintera vibe.
I like laying down a bass riff to the Boss looper using the Drop set an Octave down.
The other pedals all for other music styles.
The whole unit is pretty heavy, so I made a strong webbing carry strap that detaches with carabiners.

I just posted a thread of my main pedalboard, but I have quite a collection of pedals, and I built a compact version of my main board, to serve as a grab & go board, and also as a hot spare.

image

The highlights are the Surfy Industries Blossom Point, which is the final piece in the signal path, and virtually always on. For the sound of vintage Surf recordings, at lower volumes, this is a must.

The other highlight is the Stanley FX Abbey Reverb, which models the reverb at Abbey Road studio. I like Plate Reverb as much as I like Spring Reverb, and this diminutive pedal really captures the Plate Reverb sounds. It won’t give you quite the same feeling as a Spring Reverb emulator, such as the Topanga, but it has a charm all its own, and has some interesting drip, at higher settings.

The Nobels overdrive is perfect for the subtle sound of an amp at the edge of breakup, and will deliver stronger breakup, if you crank the Drive control. The CE-2W Chorus has the ability to be used for simple vibrato,,as well as the classic chorus from the Roland Jazz Chorus amp, and also the sound of the original Boss CE-2. The DM-2W is a pretty decent sounding Analog Delay, which I usually run very tight, sort of as a way to get a larger sound, but at the twist of the knob, it will do slapback. The Catalinbread Topanga is an old friend, and the years have treated it well, as it still holds up well as a Spring Reverb emulator. The Chorus may be replaced with a Tremolo pedal, at some point.

Synchro,
Excellent. Looks like some things I might be interested in adding.

Do you have a sample of how you use the Abbey Road?
The Natural Overdrive?

Im not really setup for recording. The Abbey Road is sort of a default reverb. It has a softer, less metallic trail, but sounds pretty good for most reverb applications. I use it for Country, or Surf songs that use moderate reverb. It won’t quite get you into Astronauts turf, but it’s surprisingly good.

The Nobels ODR-1 reminds me of the way a Deluxe Reverb overdrives. At lower drive settings, it’s like a Deluxe Reverb in early breakup. At higher drive settings, it’s sort of creamy; think Santana. What I like the most is that it responds in a very natural manner, like a cranked up amp, and not what I would expect from a pedal. These pedals are said to be popular with the Nashville session musicians, and I can see why.

Here is my board. Tuner, Soul food, Carbon Copy. The Soul food is interchangeable with a Diamond Boost, and the Carbon Copy with a Topanga Reverb (if no tank is available). The board is a hack of an ikea shelf.

That’s pretty nice. I like simple boards.

It’s great to see someone else with a Valvo Five-O on their board. It’s huge and barely fits on my board, but allowed me to remove three other pedals.

I play in a surfy garage punk band with vocals, so the non-traditional feel of the overdrive and reverb on that pedal suit me well. The board is powered by a Big Joe stomp box for wireless power, the gray pedal is an MXR micro amp clean boost, and the Garbage Pail Kid is a Mosrite Fuzzrite style clone. Oh and the board itself is a repurposed Powell Peralta Ripper!

My board is somewhat inspired by Mark Speer's pedalboard from Khruangbin. While I don't have the same pedals, I appreciate his utilitarian approach.

Crybaby Fasel Wah > Wire Instruments Fuzz > Polyune Tuner > MXR Phase 95 > MXR Sugar Drive > MXR Cabon Copy Mini > (Goodwood Audio Audition) > Universal Audio Dream 65

Of course, not all of these pedals are used for surf. The ones that play the part are the Wire Instruments Fuzz when I want the surf fuzz sound, the MXR Sugar Drive (used mainly as a clean boost) and the Dream 65 as a Deluxe Reverb simulator. The Dream 65 sounds great and it can get into surf reverb territory. The Audition is an insert so I can place any pedal in between the delay and the Dream 65. I plan on getting a Surfybear Classic to put there.

I finally joined the ranks of Surfybear and rearrange my surfboard.
Lucky that I was able to use the Voodoo PP3 and combine 2 high voltage outlets and then use a polarity reverse cable to achieve the required 12v 1amp rating. I also cut away a hole in the upper deck of pedal board right under the Surfybear spring hole so everything breathes right for the products performance.
The whole pedal board is using only the PP3 supplies along with an Xlink expansion cell.
Can't say enough good things about the Surfybear, as most of you who have one already know.
Using the Pipeline Tremolo along side Surfybear gets the surf job done well.

The Strymons both use a hefty current but the Depths vibe also draws 18v and really sounds off deep.
It can be used at 9v but 18v really changes the sound.
The Boss RC-10R looper also is a power hog.
In the end the PP3 is really up to the tasks and is as quiet as a church mouse!
And of course I got the suite all to match.
