Welp, my #1 brand of strings got discontinued a few years ago. Luckily I had stocked up on them, but I know I will eventually be forced to get another brand. I'm interested in the duller side of wound strings. Flats don't feel good to me.
I realize no one really makes 14 - 58 sets (do they?), so rolling one's own is the way. Juststrings.com makes doing that very easy, other than the 10,000 options!
So what are you all doing to get those monster sets?

I used Stringjoy to build my 14-62 set.

Oh nice! That's a great set, except for the wound G. I've been wanting to up the size of my low E from 62.
For reference, this is the set I mentioned in my first post, created via Stringjoy:
14
18
22p
34
46
62
The tensions are all right around the same value.

That's a bit heavier on the low strings than I'd like! I do like that brand's nickel wounds. Hey I just realized that wound is the same word as an injury.

That's a little heavier than I wanna go on the low strings, but stringjoy sounds cool, thanks! I guess I'll build my own and try em out with the Squier jag.

I was crazy to try it for some period on jag and even on strat but than decided it is surely not my thing and moved to 11 on strat and jazz and 12 on jag. Perfect.

I buy single Pyramid pure nickel, either from Thomann or Pyramid themselves (more expensive). 014, 018, 022p, 036, 048, 060.

I've had great results with Stringjoy for sets outside the standard stuff available from the mass market manufacturers.

I just started using nickel wound fourteens, and I absolutely love them. I'll keep pure nickel strings on my Jazzmaster and Jaguar, but I really like nickel wound on my Strats. I may even go up to sixteens in the near future. On my Fender CS DD Strat I use:
.14
.18
.20P
.38
.48
.58
I get these strings from Stringjoy. I don't think you can get pure nickel in a .58 or heavier though. Let us know what you decide to do!

I like that set. That .014 is putting around 5 pounds more tension than all the other strings? I'm super frustrated with these string calculators since none have a 17w, and many don't have other gauges I'd use. But I can guess. I like String Joy's interface though. A .060 has the same tension as a .014! I definitely don't want to go that fat. I already hate how much stronger the low E is compared to all the other strings. But they recommend going slightly heavier for the wound strings, which makes sense. So now it appears I can go up to .058 without needing to change the high e?!! Crazy town.
So hey in a purely creative non-techy way, how would you describe the difference between pure nickel and nickel wound?

Assuming you mean nickel plated steel, to me they sound slightly brighter than pure nickel (within the same brand, because one brand's pure nickel may sound brighter than another brand's nickel plated steel, case in point D'addario vs Ernie Ball).

Hi DeathTide,
Nickel wound sounds a decent amount brighter to me, and I prefer how they feel over pure nickel strings as well. Both are great, and my offsets still have pure nickel strings on them.
For the tone I am going for, nickel plated really puts the icing on the cake as part of the entire package (amp, guitar, pickups, playing style, etc...). You can see / hear me playing them on Driptones dot com at our last gig when we opened for Surfer Joe.
Let me reiterate though, strings are just a small (but important) part of the equation. It has taken me 8 years to finally get the tone I have been chasing. Sorry for writing a book, but I hope this helps some.

What are the all-flat wound options? Looking for 14's but all flats.

Yes of course. I know the tone is a combination of a million things, including the room I'm playing in and the state of one's hearing. That said, in every amp with every cab in every room I've used, those plain strings howl. Thanks to the wound .017 now it's only the high e. I think for whatever reason, whether it's my playing style or guitar setup, brighter strings always are too bright. That's even counting my strat days! It's such a bummer because those Zebras are perfect for the A - G, then the wound .017 (which is a nickel wound not pure nickel), it's just the low E and high e. I guess I like the detail a bright amp setting delivers, but I don't like the uncontrollable brightness of bright strings. Listen to Missylou (SG101 2022 comp) for an example of the Zebras with the duller low E.
I'm gonna look for some pure Nickels. Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

Do you mean having every string be a wound string and flatwould at that?
I suspect they don't make wound strings much smaller than 17 but given that the core is smaller, it might work alright on the high E at that gauge.

That is exactly what I am wanting. I'd be afraid of the wildly imbalanced tension, and increasing the chances of breakage to use a .017w for the high e. But damn I want to try.
Say - anyone know how to calculate string tension?

Looks like an 18W is the smallest you can get from them and the tension is almost 60 lbs, which I don't think is feasible.

Thanks! I did check that calculator and they don't have all the gauges to really get a well matched set.
Plus every string calculator is different! I'm trying for a set that the high e is around 25lbs, and the rest are around 26 or 27. And every damn string calculator is different and doesn't have all the gauges I'd need for this set.
I think the problem is that each string manufacturer makes strings that are slightly different under tension, so their calculators are based differently from the get go. I found some super annoying ones that only do one string at a time, but these have all the gauges.
That's why I'm curious how they calculate and what strings each one is based on. I found one where you could specify the string material, but that one disagreed vastly from the others.
Hey what's an acceptable range for this? I mean, how far off from each other to avoid warping over time? 10%? 5%? Is there even any data on this?

I wouldn't worry so much about having the tensions all equal. Dick Dale's set is wildly uneven and it worked fine for him for 6 decades. I mean the Beast probably had that uneven tension on its neck constantly since the 60s.
