Well I am looking for a new electric (or possibly a bass) my budget is $650 max. I’ve always been a Strat guy. What should I go for this go around?

I play bass mostly. But that Bass 6 is beautiful. The Jag you tagged me in too was another one I was looking at.

If you want something different but like the Strat feel, why not look at a Classic Vibe Jazzmaster? Gives you a different sound, but the neck isn't worlds different from a standard Strat.

If you want a bass, but haven't played bass before, I'm going to stay in my lane and suggest a Classic Vibe Bass VI. The new purple metallic 70's limited edition is really nice, though personally I'm holding out for a Silver Sparkle 60's like this one:

The neck feels similar at the nut end but obviously the frets are very close towards the heel.

And it sounds so goooooooood!

How close are the frets towards the heal?

I don't know - compare it to a JM. Like if I'm playing a Jaguar at the 7th fret, what would it feel like on a Jazzmaster?

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Put a capo on the first fret of a Strat or JM and tune down a half step. Since the distance from the nut to the first fret is about 1.5", that's what a 24" scale is like.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

I had two guitars with the scales in question handy, so with some quick measurements, it's like playing one fret higher on the strat neck (that is, 7th fret spacing on strat is about the same as 6th fret spacing on Jaguar necks). So it's not much different than putting a capo on the first fret of a strat and retuning that a half step down.

I got a Paranormal Cyclone recently and love it!

I really wanted a sparkle but ended up getting a MIJ Strat from my birth year. Pics as soon as it comes in.

Just a heads up on those Squier Bass VIs -- cool idea and decent execution, but IMO they need a lot of work to become playable. Tone is subjective, of course, but mine had shoddy fretwork on it and needed gone over by a tech (plus a new nut). It's well known they won't intonate properly with the stock bridge, so replacing that is a must. IMO the strings they send on it are terrible - just putting high quality strings on mine improved the tone immediately. (the Fralin pickups I put in it after that did way, way more to improve the tone)

IOW - fine for what they are, but be prepared to put money into them if you want them to be GOOD instruments.
