Permalink Fuzz pedal for surfy 60’s tone

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 Next

Let us revive the topic cause I see many options now on some “fuzzrite” replicas. What’s you favorite? Catalinbread Fuzzrite, Spaghetti Western Fuzz, Ennio, T68 Morricone Fuzz, Pale Rider? After watching some demos I’ve got a hook on Bigfoot FX Spaghetti Western Fuzz, but it should be ordered from USA, is it worth it? I surely want to go as budget as possible here, but all of them are up to $200 or so.

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of a Joyo Ultimate Octave as far as budget fuzz pedals go.
$19.00 - $40.00 USD
Some folks disregard these as they are a copy of some Fulltone, Hendrix-like fuzz but if you keep the fuzz low and the output high they can do excellent 60's fuzz and the octave setting just makes them sound more splatty and old.
One caveat though: they sound best with a buffered pedal in the chain somewhere, something like a Boss pedal or any other buffered pedal, doesn't even need to be on.
If you have all true bypass pedals this one doesn't sound very good.

You can hear this pedal on our tunes "Numb One", "Agent Yellow Jacket" or "Arigato Takeshi", all on youtube. If you reference these I'd check out the record versions.

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks, I need to check it! As well as to check my pedal chain cause I never cared of it and don’t know which ones got true bypass and which ones are buffered.

I don't usually care/worry about that stuff either. If pedals work good together and sound like I want them to then I'm happy but that Joyo just happens to sound better that way.

Another vote for the Joyo. The Electro Harmonix Satisfaction fuzz might be worth checking out too. I have the Catlinbread but find the Joyo more versatile.

I love my Ennio Fuzz. I also have a n EHX Satisfaction fuzz, which is a seriously great low-cost option.

I have one of the GMR Spares Fuzzbite - bought it made, rather than a kit for £60. It does the Mosrite Fuzzrite thing well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-ITLXEFjcU

BigFoot Spaghetti Western Fuzz is great. I have 2 of them on different boards.
I've found them to be closest to the Davie Allan fuzz sound.

I don’t have much experience with octave fuzz aside from the fender blender but I’ve heard that they need to be the very first thing in an effect chain (or so says the JHS pedal guy). Like…even before a tuner. It’s suggested the guitar go directly in. Have you found that there’s any validity to this practice?

I have found that to be the case with vintage fuzz pedals but with this Joyo it doesn't seem to matter where in the chain the fuzz is, just that there is a buffer or buffered pedal somewhere in the chain.

I also have to put in a word for the customer service at BigFoot FX.

Not too long after I got my first Spaghetti Western Fuzz, I lost my pedal board (it was my own fault).
When I got in touch with Jered to order a replacement, he did an online search for used Spaghetti Western Fuzzes and found one for sale at my local Guitar Center. It turns out whoever found the board sold a bunch of the pedals to GC. I was able to reacquire almost everything I lost.
He gave up a sale to help me out.

I've since bought a second from him for another board I use.

This pedal will get you there, 100%

Wire Instruments made a fuzz for me that does the surfy fuzz. I'm not sure what his price is on the pedal now. Earnie Bailey primarily sells them through word of mouth and Instagram postings.

Not cheap ($200) but I make a fuzz/treble booster that fits the bill pretty well.

Love your sound! With strat or jazzmaster it’s more sparkling but with my Gretsch jet is becomes full fuzzy distortion but without much “wool”.
