I have built a new pedalboard. I am in need of a new SurfyBear to put with my amp. I have only owned a Compact before an am considering the Classic or Metal for this go around. what do you guys say? who has played both?

I have played all three of them and they are all great. It depends on you tastes and music you play. However for me Compact is close to Metal and Classic is really different, so you may want to try it.

I've played both the metal as the compact. Both are great, but the metal has a bigger sound, which was exactly what I was looking for when I bought it to replace the compact. The compact has a nice, full sound, but, the reverb is shorter, which is due to the shorter springs, I suppose. I haven't played the classic, so I can't comment on that, but I reckon that there won't be too much difference between the classic and the metal one since they have the same reverb tank.

I may be mistaken but Metal and Compact share the same scheme, that is probably more important that a spring length. But surely it’s a subject for discussion) with Compact I may reach similar sound with Metal, just more mix and dwell and you almost there, but not with Classic that sounds completely different as for me.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up pulling the trigger on the Classic to get a little darker tone. Since it will live by the amp, i figured i can get a Drip Switch if i feel i need 2 tones.

I have two Classics (blonde, brown - one day I'll probably get the black Classic to complete the collection) and a Compact. I bought a Drip Switch from Mel back at the 2018 SG101 Convention and use it with the blonde for bypass functionality. The brown classic I bought used from Diggey on SG101 along with the SurfyBear Dripswitch for bypass functionality.
I have the surf green Compact on my primary pedalboard and use it often. I enjoy the Mixer 1 and Mixer 2 capability along with the built-in Bypass. Maybe I'm getting older and my hearing not as fine tuned as it once was, I don't really hear much difference between the Compact and the Classic. This is a good thing to me, fwiw.
Aesthetically, I love the Classic with it's cool tolex color options and more traditional outboard reverb style. If I were to play out, I'd bring a Classic and leave my '64 Fender Reverb Unit at home. I find the Classic's flatter/thinner chassis a boon for transport and space considerations.
Practicality-wise, I love the Compact for it's built-in functionality (Mixer 1 & 2, True Bypass) and the convenience of it able to fit on my pedalboard.
I might get the fiesta red Compact to put on my traveling pedalboard at some point.

As said, I've used both compact and metal and I can assure you they sound different. A lot different imo. The metal has a much, much bigger sound than the compact, which the compact cannot emulate, no matter how far you crank open the dwell and mix in my experience - I tested it. But that makes sense as its reverb pan is twice as big, so of course it sounds different. In fact, I think that the classic and the metal sound more similar because they have the same reverb pan (which is as important as the circuitry). And finally, the metal is cheaper than the classic, which was for me the deciding factor in the choice between a classic and a metal as I was told they sound similar. But I can only 100% be sure of their similarity once I've played a classic.
Edit: I have the Blue Metal 2.0 (just for completeness' sake)

Ok, as I said and it’s a matter of personal taste an subject for discussion) for me Metal and Classic are completely different beasts and Metal and Compact are just two variants of the same breed.
