Permalink fender pv 65 jag pickup microphonic

New Topic

has anyone had one of the pure vintage pickups go microphonic? i’m noticing a LOT of signal if i tap on the pickup cover or near it only on the bridge. neck pickup has a little bit of noise but nowhere nesr the amount in the bridge.

i’ve double checked all my wiring and haven’t found anything out of sorts.

to my understanding, if a pickup has gone microphonic, the coil is physically vibrating in the housing and wax potting it is just tossing a bandaid on it. is that correct? Bummed the pickup didn’t make it a year from new. they certainly sound great; but fender doesn’t let you buy only one, i believe.

I wouldn't write that pickup off as having a loose coil yet.
If the metal "claw" that surrounds the bottom and sides of the pickup has come loose at all the pickup would become very microphonic as well.
A good and quick wax potting of the claw to the rest of the pickup could most likely cure your problem.

Hope that helps.

Yep, they lasted just under a year. Had them repotted about 18 months ago and so far so good. No idea what the cause was.

I don't see why wax potting, if it works, shouldn't work permanently. The only way I think this might not work is if the pickup was originally potted with something more permanent, like lacquer, which might not let the wax flow into all the gaps.

What were your pickups originally potted with?

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

no idea. they are stock pure vintage 65 from fender. the claw moves equally on the neck and bridge pickup, which is to say not much at all. a slight wiggle but no back and forth.

i’m much more confident inside an amplifier so i’ll get the scope and magnifying lenses out and try again.

thanks for the response!

that’s a bummer. i was worried about QC recently. they really do
sound great.

thank you. ground continuity is very solid as tested. the claw itself doesn’t seem to move but there is the slightest amount of give on neck and bridge. i’ll triple check those connections.

I think you all were correct! i’m guessing the claw was busted ever slightly loose from whatever adhesive. Pretty sure it happened when i switched pickup covers recently.

I may give wax potting a go… too bad those hide glue pots aren’t available anymore, I could kill two birds with one pot. tolexing this amp, and fixing this pickup.
