Permalink Question about using music in YouTube videos

New Topic

I have been experimenting off & on for a few years with taking videos of rides on my sidecar outfits and posting them on YouTube to share with friends, family and the bike forums I participate in. This year I bought a GoPro knock off that takes much better video and I've made a decent mount for it for one of the bikes (& plan to build a mount for the other bike soon) so I expect to do more videos now.

I would like to use surf music for the soundtracks BUT I don't want to offend artists whose music I love or end up in trouble over copyright issues so I'm asking for advice on what I need to do before I start.

This video was taken by a sidecar passenger with a hand held low res camera and I used music from YouTube's royalty free library but it will give you an idea of what I mean

First, just ask the artist for permission. Offer to put an overlay of text with the song title and artist name in one of the corners of the video and to list all of the info in the description. That way it doubles as an ad for the band and I bet you would get a good number of artists agreeing to it...that is, unless you were planning to use Henry Mancini, for example.

Can I ask you here? ¿Que Honda? and Surf Lyre from Plymouth Rock would be just about right for the on I'm working on now.
Would an overlay with band name + song title for a 10 seconds at the beginning of each song and links to Bandcamp in the description work for you?

Ha! Email me at ted@satans-pilgrims.com. I
forgot to say ask them privately. Very Happy

Yeah, I thought it might be better to ask privately right after I posted that.
Email sent.
