Permalink Dick Dale and Duane Eddy displays at Musical Instruments Museum

New Topic

I was in Scottsdale, AZ last week visiting family. My wife and I spent the best part of a day at the Musical Instruments Museum in Phoenix and were amazed at the size and breadth of their exhibits. They cover all types on musical instruments from across the globe.

My thing was guitars and drums, of course. I took photos of every interesting guitar I could find. Some were displayed to show the builders' artistry. Others were actual equipment and costumes from many famous musicians.

Here are some pics of the Dick Dale corner with his actual stuff. And a pic of me at the Phoenix-native Duane Eddy display.

Other artist displays included Johnny Cash, Alvino Rey, King Sunny Ade, Maroon 5, Alice Cooper, Beatles, Stones, the Who, Glen Campbell and many more covering all genres of music.

Hmm.. Arizona. I wonder if they'll ever put a Nokie Edwards display together. His last known address was in Kingman, AZ - about 200 miles from Scottsdale, AZ.

Do you know if these are permanently on display? I will visit family there once the Pandemic is under control, and we can travel outside of Canada again...might be a while.

Hey Rev,
I think they are both permanent displays. The Dick Dale equipment was "on loan" from Dick Dale Enterprises, but probably a permanent loan.

Cool! Thanks for posting!

Around a 6 hour drive from so cal, traffic depending.

Hey I have a question - what’s with the blonde / oxblood reverb tank? I thought those only came in brown or black?

Daniel Deathtide

Thanks, very interesting.
Looks like they have a website https://mim.org/artist-gallery/
Good catch by Bigtikidude regarding the displayed guitar.
Can still picture DD opening a gig with Nitro.

The 60's models came in a variety of colors to match the amps.

Ah! Thanks for that, I had no idea. All the ones I saw on Reverb were brown / brown. That is cool!

Also, Leo didn't originally intend to ever release Blonde tolex amps. In fact, it was Dick Dale who first used one, which was a prototype that Leo had lent him last minute for a show. Dale said he loved the color so much that Leo decided to make that the standard color for the Showman.

While Fender has catalog colors of their products there are endless one-offs of just about everything. A guy who knows a guy who has a roommate can always get a little something extra...

It is an early CS model as it has two string guides.
