Permalink Fender '63 Reissue Reverb Unit Prices

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I was looking to pickup a used reissue Fender '63 Reverb Unit... when did used prices hit $1000+ ? These use to be $300-$450 all day. (Kind of like those FRV1 inflation prices) NOW, just because used Fender 63 Reverb units are priced at $1000+ doesn't mean they are selling Smile

Everything is crazy right now for any type of collectible. In this case, they're out of production. In general, supply chains have been disrupted for more than a year now. A lot of people have been stuck inside during this mess and they're getting antsy. And this has precipitated the old "Omigod, if I don't get one now, I'll never be able to get one." And in the US, a good chunk of the population just got $2000 handed to them, regardless of whether or not they needed it. So I'm not convinced that the long-term outlook has changed that much.

If you look at the reverb.com price graph for the last 3 years or so here - https://reverb.com/p/fender-63-reverb-unit-reissue-1994-2016 - it just looks to me like an average of around $500 with some pretty wild swings over the last year. Look at the low average prices last March and before Xmas 2020.

Askin' ain't gettin'. We'll see what happens, but I'm not buying into this "Gotta have one" mentality. Hell, I need nothing anyway. None

covid era pricing is insane on everything. pretty crazy (the pedal market is in its own absurd renaissance right now) i just build my own cloned fender gear these days for less than half the price all in.

if I had time I'd build a few reverb units to let go for cheap.

you could always ride the surfybear wave. the new blue "metal" version is quite the looker.

So true, Derek! In my opinion, they are not really worth it. I just ordered a 6g15 from Winnie at Winnie at Winfield Amps...He was very friendly, and prompt with questions. I have not received it, but this may be an alternative to look at. Happy dripping!

Curmudgeon65 has the right idea. If you must have an outboard tube driven unit, find yourself a reputable small builder. You will get hand wired, better components and something much closer to an original '63 than the Fender Reissue both quality and tone wise. If you can live without tubes, a Surfy Classic will get you all drippy 'verb you will ever need at half the price in a smaller package.

I had a Fender '63 Reverb Reissue, and I used it for many years. Last year I picked up an original beige '64 reverb box for $900. I'm not a vintage gear snob, but I did an A and B comparison between the reissue and the vintage reverb box. The tone of the reissue was nowhere near the real thing (even turning the reverb down and using the box as a preamp). I had been happy with it for years, but it sounded awful after trying the real deal... They're really not worth $1000. You might as well wait for a cheap vintage unit to pop up.

Wow! $900!??? That’s awesome you lucky dog. Almost $1000 less than I paid for my ‘64! Thanks for posting about the sonic differences, I never considered a reissue because I was sure there would be differences, just a gut feeling I guess!

Yea prices are out of hand for the reissues, I'll hang tight till they come back down to the $400-$500 range. Great price for your vintage unit, I'd actually consider $900 for a vintage one any day at this point. Way back in 1989 I purchased a 1964 Fender Reverb Unit for $400, I foolishly sold it about 10 years ago and have been chasing that reverb ever since.

Here it is. It was modded at some point, then put back to original spec, hence the price.

I have 2 reissues. 1 for playing, and the other for funding my retirement...lol

Has anyone noticed the price of the Boss FRV-1 pedal seems to be going up too?

Yes.....I have one in excellent condition in the original box w/paperwork, etc that I don't use. I am not actively selling but if anybody here wants it, feel free to PM me. I would not be looking to get the crazy $$$ that are being asked either.

I have one too. Was great for touring overseas. Keeping onto mine just in case.

Over the years, I have seen a couple of vintage Fender reverbs and they both sucked. In both cases, they were either modded or "repaired" poorly. It is one thing to have a piece of vintage gear, it is another to have that piece actually sound like it should. I think vintage pieces are great as long as you know what you are looking for and know how to bring it up to snuff while swinging a deal.

For my part, I feel fortunate to have found a 63 RI for $500 CDN about 6 yrs ago. At this point, however, my DIY Surfy Bear gets used more frequently. For both of these units, I use MIK Accutronics pans. For compact setups, I have used a True Spring.

Which MIK Accutronics pan do you use? I have a 4AB3C1B and while it sounds amazing, the decay is too long and it washes out all the notes. Vintage pans have a much shorter decay, probably because of different spring construction or just spring age. But they are impossible to find here in Europe.
I wish Accutronics made the same pan but in medium and short decay. I'll have to order a MOD 4AB1C1B for my DIY Surfybear.

From my experience, and others in the forum (and please if someone who has the opposite experience correct me), the MOD tanks have typically (each is different) longer decay than modern Accutronics. Same for TAD and other brands. Seek out a vintage.

MOD is a longer decay. Unfortunately, Accutronics pans have gotten longer and closer to MODs in recent years. Stay tuned for some exciting news regarding shorter decay pans closer to the vintage ones...

If the decays of the 4AB3C1B is too long, maybe try a medium-decay 4AB2C1B pan. For example -

mod - https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/reverb-tank-mod-4ab2c1b-medium-decay-2-spring

revisit - https://www.amprepairparts.com/reverb.htm

I personally like a longer decay for some things, and a shorter decay for others. I also sometimes like 3-spring pans, e.g.,

medium decay - https://www.amplifiedparts.com/search/node/9ab3c1b

long decay - https://www.amplifiedparts.com/search/node/9ab2c1b

I have generally found reverb pans to be a bit of a crap shoot. They're mechanical devices and sometimes vary, even among different examples of the same build. And that is part of the charm, IMO.
