Permalink Stairway to Heaven solo in surf style?

New Topic

Some of you may watch Rick Beato’s videos on YouTube. A recent one that I liked was ‘What If EVH or Eric Johnson Played the “Stairway to Heaven” Solo?’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cOosnkWj2g&t=299s)

I got to thinking: what if a surf guitarist played the solo? I thought I might apply my meager talents to the task, and wondered whether there was any interest among players here to try?

I sent an e-mail to Beato asking whether I could use his backing track for this purpose, but I haven’t heard back. If there was interest here, I’d commit to making a backing tracking for us to use if Beato doesn’t come through.

What do you think?

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

The tempo needs to be faster (like this version).

Hi, I'm Gellert, guitarist for The Fintastics.

Thanks for the link--the StH part of that tune has the guitar playing the vocal, whereas I'm interested in folks making their own versions of the guitar solo.

If someone wants a different tempo or pitch to a backing track, that could be arranged.

One of the nice attractions of surf music for me is that you never have to hear Stairway to Heaven. That song haunted my early guitar days.

Here are some random thoughts of mine on the topic:

First of all, I have no resentment for "Stairway to Heaven". It may have been played to death since its release, but it's hard to deny, that it had a huge cultural impact and is still pulling people toward 70s rock, who previously had no connection to that kind of music. I always liked the finger style sections and the overall dynamic development of the song more than its lyrics, but that's just me.

Having said that, there are two problems I suspect in the context of the proposed experiment:

[1.] The concept of "guitar solo": Even though surf music is at its core instrumental guitar music, guitar solos in the classical sense are not a key component of surf tunes. Sure, there is some soloing in the blues/r'n'b based tunes sometimes, like in "Toes on the Nose" by Eddie & the Showmen or in Dick Dale's adaptation of the Bo Diddley rhythm "Surfing Drums" (aka "Jungle Fever"), but these are basically rock'n'roll solos played with a lot of reverb. The more melodic tunes usually rather feature a sax solo. (Or am I completely worng here?)

So, my question would be, how many of you/us/surf guitarists actually play guitar solos? How do you approach them?

(Actually, I have slots for solos in a few songs in our set, but I keep them very simple, short and kind of thematic/repetitive and I conciously stay away from anything too much rock or blues, because for me, it does not really work in the context of our songs.)

[2.] The solo section in "Stairway" itself: If you listen to the rhythm section on the original recording or Rick Beato's re-recording, what happens is actually pretty far away from surf music, especially what happens with the drums. The solos in Rick Beato's video work, because they all stay in the realm of "classic rock" or its sucessors. I don't know whether playing surf on top of the same backing track would yield an equally rounded result.

Having said all that, I would probably try it out anyway. Wink

Edit: I just remembered Eddie Bertrand's improvised piece at the Surf Museum, so that would be a rare example of something not based mostly on blues:

Simoncoil, Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

When I first thought of this topic, I thought that some of the fine guitarists and songwriters on this forum would play something awesome against this backing track. I didn’t think about how this backing track compares to the structure of surf (or surf-like) songs.

Page’s solo takes about 50 seconds and has little in the repetition of themes, apart from three variations in a descending A minor pentatonic scale. The chords in the solo are repetitions of Am, G, and F. Surf songs have more of an intro, verse, chorus, bridge structure, with repetitions and variations of larger sections. Chord structures tend also to be more complex.

Your point on the sound of the backing track being not very surf-like is also well taken.

In spite of these issues, I think folks here could put out some cool stuff, though I recognize it may not be at the top of their list. I plan to see what I can do along these lines, and I’ll post anything I do that I think is worthwhile. I hope to hear something from you, too!

Not Stairway to Heaven but The Berserkers incorporate the Dazed and Confused solo into this. Well worth listening to the entire set, but they do a spy trilogy song that starts around 19:15 with the Led Zeppelin portion over the James Bond Theme at 26:30
