Probably not on everybody's list of gotta have brands for surf. That said, I stumbled across this solid state Bulldog 30 R in a thrift store - I imagine 80's vintage. Everything works. Pretty light. 10 inch speaker. 30 watts -fairly loud indeed. Great grab and go amp. Good for studio, small gigs, and rehearsal...depending on your drummer. As most solid states of that era, the really dirty end is lacking (add your pedal of choice) but the mild grit part is pretty good. As one might expect, the cleans are where this box excels. More importantly, the reverb is QUITE GOOD. Not kidding. No foolin'! Worthy of your consideration. Like most Hiwatts, these can be pricey, even the used ones. That said, should you stumble in to a deal in your travels...you could do worse.

I would totally be willing to try one out. I dig solid state amps, as long as they aren't trying to imitate Marshalls, and I'm happy using overdrive pedals to add dirt.

Of course! I generally only use amps generally regarded as awful! Don't know if HiWatt is regarded as awful though. But to the topic, really loved your Youtube clip!

I've never tried the solid state stuff but their tube amps can surf big time! Loud and clean.

I think that any amp with a nice clean tone can surf. Even a good on-board reverb is not necessary with Surfy Bear and other outboard drippy 'verbs available. May not sound authentic first wave, but that's okay.

There will be a video in the near future. However, logistically speaking, my foot says it's not gonna be today. Stay tuned.

I had a sound city tube amp that did the surf thing JUST fine. haven't tried their solid state stuff. haven't met a solid state amp I love except doing pedal heavy shoegaze. that said, a tube reverb unit in front of a solid state amp is a lovely thing.
