Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

I’ve spent way too much time recently listening to 20th century surf so I’ve committed my April to catching up with surf from the year 2020. I’m using this list as the backbone of my operation. So far it has given me Captain Rico & The Ghost Band, Draculina (absolute fire!), that Messer Chups cover of “Wicked Game” (eat your heart out, Chris Isaac), Potbelly MacKraken (not very surfy but I dig ‘em), Sheverb (not very surfy but totally rad!), and a Seatopians album I somehow overlooked. And then PolloGuitar shared Lewis Bailey. So much goodness. I really think that modern surf is my favorite period. It doesn’t have many (any?) hit singles but the music is just so good that I feel like I know a secret the rest of the world is missing. Keep up the good work, surf bands.

I don't have the numbers to back it up but I think maybe there was more instrumental surf guitar released in 2020 than there was in the entire 1980s.

I definitely have an I-know-something-you-don’t-know feeling with my relationship with surf music. This is amplified in circumstances such as the masses being spoon-fed (or force-fed) the pop junk that is coming out today. I do not understand how anyone would choose to listen to that stuff.
