Permalink Book: Surf's Beat Generation

This isn't meant to be a book review, just an fyi to those who might be interested in adding this to your surf music and culture library. It is actually publication printed in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name titled "Surf's Beat Generation--an art and cultural revolution in Orange County 1953-1964" which was displayed at Cal State Fullerton back in March of 2016.

It makes some tangential connections of Beat culture to Surf culture mostly through artwork, hangouts, and bohemian lifestyle within the geographical milieu of Southern California of the period. It is heavy on artwork of course, mostly in the form of pioneering surf artist and publisher John Severson, but there is also an essay on surf music and a couple of picture of performances and flyers I've scanned here.

There is also a lot of related material such as vintage surf movie posters, decals, Surf magazine covers, etc.--a lot of it with art by Rick Griffin--as well as period photos by surf photographer Ron Church with a few Bob Perine Fender ads for good measure. Your text to link here...

Very cool, Ted! I think you're going to really like it.

As one who has an interest in beat and surfing cultures I had to order it. Thanks for the heads-up.

Sure thing guys...glad I could pass it along.
