Permalink Artist Name/Band Name Advice

New Topic

While I'm plotting my first surf release, which is essentially a solo project, I can't help but notice most modern surf acts have a band name rather than an individual's name. And the band name often has a cheeky surfy reference.

I just figured to do it under my own name. Dick Dale. Link Wray. Duane Eddy. There's a precedent. But it's good practice to think about the market and branding, even in a specialty niche, perhaps especially in a specialty niche. Sometimes semantics matter.

Thoughts? Advice? What would ya'll do if you were prepping a release for the instro scene (as a primarily a one band project)?

I'm in the same boat. One hard part in my mind is that by myself I like to record mellow stuff, and with a band I'd be playing more intense stuff. The good band names I have aren't mellow at all!

Can you draw any clues from the music itself?

Neptune Trojans

A lot of surf band names are really on the nose. The Surfragettes is really clever and on brand. Great name imho. Is an artist making a mistake by not having an aquatic cheeky name? These decisions last a long time.

Yeah, the music is what's important, so that's a huge touchstone for what's appropriate.

I just went over today's Fiberglass Jungle playlist. Out of 31 acts about 8 of them had "surfy" names. So I guess anything goes. 3 were individual names. I guess anything goes.

I guess it would be nice to somehow connect it with the style of surf you gonna play. For example if you play some latino mexicano influenced surf instrо, you may use a name like Don Oceano and las Olas)
