Permalink Anyone ever use a 2x15 cab for Guitar?

More specifically, one of those old, giant bassman cabs? I tend to use a twin or pro combo, live. But I tend to do most of my recording through a bandmaster reverb head and iso cab. I got the bassman cab (1967) to match a bassman head, thinking I might use it for bass. But I never do. Now I’m starting to wonder how much the bandmaster head on the bassman cab would open up my sound. I know surf people have used 15” speakers. But this cab seems a little strange. Oversized, old fender eminence speakers. They don’t have the best reputation.

I do.
Kind of.

This is now a 1x15 'detuned' cab.
It's perfect for live shows where monitors can be sketchy, and perfect for rehearsal when playing through amps... the sound is right there instead of down low. No amp stand/tilt back required.
Also, you can mic both the speaker and the open hole when recording for some nice blend options.

Those 2x15 Bassman cabinets are huge sounding. Actually, I have experience with the more compact Bassman 50 version where they're arranged diagonally but I assume the sounds is similar.

The main thing is that you feel them practically as strongly as you hear them! I guess it's the volume of air they move. It shakes my entire place if I crank it.

I recorded the lead of this song through my Bassman 50, with a Traynor cranked. Maybe you can get a sense of the percussive force of the cabinet. I think I probably loosened some of the siding while I was recording this.

that stack is epic. That must give a kick in the back.

We provide free earplugs at all shows and before we start I give a speech about it. I tell people even if they don’t fee like they need them - with this band they do! We kinda gauge how good a show was by how many were taken.

FWIW, it's possible to shoe-horn two 15s into a standard sides Bandmaster/Bassman cabinet. You have to remove some of the baffle cleats but it works and sounds great. I've used this for guitar, bass, and keyboards.

2 x15 or better yet 2(2 X15).. it's the only way to fly. and make it JBL Airlines..

MelWaldorf, very nice rig you have there. However, the way the speakers are aligned in the cab is really flaring up my OCD. I guess it would be good exposure and response prevention therapy for me! Big Grin

SixString, if it makes you feel better, I recovered the cabinet with wheat grille cloth a few years ago, and the asymmetry is much less obvious. ;)

Are we still on Surfguitar101.com ?
I understand times have changed Smile but... what kind of question is this?

About using a 2x15? A good one. I had a fellow come up to me (after the gig in that photo) telling me he'd never heard guitar out of a 2x15, not to mention two 2x15s. He was utterly blown away. So yeah, I like this question!

Gute reat anecdote, gear and pic. But I don’t envy your back, don’t you have times where you think „ok one 2x15 should be enough for tonight“? Very Happy Much respect!!

We're sort of a performance art show in that respect, no matter the size of the show I bring that rig. The visual has an effect that I enjoy, but the SOUND is the real reason.

After hefting Twins around when I was younger - these cabs and heads are A LOT easier to move around. They're actually pretty light even with JBLs in em. I'll never go back to Twins, mostly for the sound reason but also because they're a lot harder to lift!

I have this, yet to use both together live though. Yes it's loud!

I do! I loaded an old drip-edge Bassman cab with a pair of JBL D-130's and run them with either this Bassman or a Dual Showman I have depending on the gig. Classic surf sounds!
