Permalink Build: Fender 6G14-A Showman!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 4 5 Next

Hey everyone! So I don't know even where to start but I am building a 6G14-A Showman and I might be needing some advice here. I've got basic electronic knowledge and the internet, of course, to complete this so it should go fine.

Well here's my idea. I have just bought a repro Brownface showman faceplate on eBay and a Twin Reverb Chassis to start. My idea is to recreate it as close to the original as I can head wise first then a 2x15 cab later loaded with JBL's. But head wise for now that's what I am making. Maybe a big project but I could save a little money and have a "mint" amp that I have built and know it inside and out. I have an idea of what transformers and a choke I will be using, classic tone are most widely used for projects like this and they're reliable. Output Trans Power Trans Choke
But questions I have are very specific, can I find a schematic/diagram for the pre-amp tube wiring, dog house wiring? The mainboard, pots, trans, and everything else I can find online except those few pretty huge parts of the build that are needed above.

Advice, positive vibes, and just a general great audience would be great.
Please I don't want to hear the comments about, "YoU'Re uNeXpErIeNcEd." I've got to start from somewhere, why not start with something big to learn more?

Thanks all,
Liam S

Tqi and I have talked about this before. I ended up buying a Gomez Surfer instead but he forged ahead. He can probably answer all of those wiring questions you have. Here's his thread:

Hey! Thanks!

Update!

I have bought the chassis. I am using a twin reverb chassis. I bought it on eBay from Zachhunter.

Chassis

Also the faceplate I bought too, I'm thinking I will have to drill some new holes to accommodate the faceplate.

Why twin reverb chasis? It's bigger than the og Showman cab. Unless you play to put a reverb tank in there and make it more like a dual showman reverb, that is.

If you haven't worked on or built a tube amp before I would highly recommend building a champ kit first. I am not trying to discourage you but having just restored a Zorko El Basso that had been all but gutted, you are taking on a challanging project for even the most experienced amp tech or builder.
Please keep us posted as to how it's going !!

The Twin chassis is the only one available on the market. It’s is the same size as the faceplate for the amp which is all I need.

I think Liam can do it. It's a bit more complicated than connecting the dots, but it's not like the most exotic thing ever built. Just mind the charges of the filter caps and bleed them to ground before you stick a screwdriver in. And keep an eye on the outer foil of the other capacitors, that will save you a lot of work eliminating hum. Go Liam!

Its a big project but I believe with patience and time I’ll have it built.

Chassis has arrived.

Pots, lamp holder + light + red light holder, a few resistors, input jacks and their 68k and 1m resistors. I need the .003uF caps and the two Jupiter .1 capacitors too. Those are about $6 apiece. Closer and closer!

I've worked a little on them, watched a ton of videos on clones, fixing, and pretty much everything on youtube about Fender amps from that time. I think I can do it!

Trying to find power and an output transformer currently. If anyone is even watching this thread anymore I'm looking at the [Hammond 291FX] (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond-Manufacturing/291FX?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvoxtwRLJtA5zE5pUQPwVbE) for the power. I'm needing help finding at the output transformer. Preferably an 8 ohm one. Ideas?

You might as well get one that allows you to switch between impedance values, since it's so easy these days.

Right, I already chose this: http://www.classictone.net/40-18102.html
Cheaper and does the job right.
The power has been figured out too: http://www.classictone.net/40-18004.html

Pots, pilot light, jacks. Basically the front panel parts came in. Someone on FB is sending me some old caps he got from a radio store on Monday for free so we'll see how that goes. Just an update!

Both of these came in the mail today. The faceplate really doesn't fit the controls on the chassis(problem #1) And I got some NOS capacitors today for free!

Liam S

So I was worried sick about it fitting..I did some "measuring" and "comparing" to the chassis. Not a big deal! Is it my OCD? Will it be noticeable in the head cabinet? Of course, I'll have to drill holes, no biggie. Also picking up a 63 Reverb unit here soon!

Wow. Every single hole is offset! That's a lot of work. Will you weld in a new front plate or plug the holes as you go along? Either way, hats of.

I'll probably just plug the holes, I have no idea how to weld.
