When was that song originally released?
what was the span of years (most) of the covers came out?
I have to admit I don’t recall hearing it before.

I'll weigh in on fact checking. I'll take 1966 for $200.
Internet says:
DING DING! Guitar Guitar July 1966.

From Wiki
"Walk Away Renée" is a song written by Michael Brown, Bob Calilli, and Tony Sansone for the band the Left Banke, released as a single in July 1966. Steve Martin Caro is featured on lead vocals. It spent 13 weeks on the US charts, with a top spot of number 5.

Fun fact, it inspired Tom Scholz (Boston) More Than A Feeling. "I see my Marianne walking away"

I was born in 71, not young by any means,48.
But that’s a little before my time. But I’ve heard other older songs
That maybe we’re not quite as popular. So I can’t figure why I haven’t heard this.

Here's another Left Banke song supposedly written about Renee:

One of the most beautiful baroque pop songs ever, originally recorded by The Left Banke, then The Four Tops and then so many others. I tried to do it justice in the surf guitar style. All credit due to songwriters Michael Brown, Bob Calilli and Tony Sansone for the amazing melody over a beautiful chord progression. Rolling Stone placed this song number 220 on their list of all time greatest songs.
Unknown to me, the lead singer of the Left Banke, Steve Martin Caro, passed away last week. I hope this version is a fitting memory.
I used a Strat into an Ibanez echo, into a Fender Reverb tank into a Quilter Micropro amp.
Hope you enjoy - Ferenc / PolloGuitar / Frankie PoolBoy

Your version is pretty cool, I like it. Lots of 60's pop like that could be reworked into a Surf Style. I takes time to do that I would imagine

How long did it take you to work up this version?

I usually try to learn songs reverse engineering a song with out tabs listening to the recordings, it usually takes me a few days to burn a tune in my head, sometimes a week or more. Depends on the song.

Thanks for listening!

I spent about 4 hours coming up with my arrangement, and teaching my hands to get the muscle memory for the moves. Thanks for listening!

The Left Banke took it to 55 on the charts, and then the Four Tops took it to 15. So, it wasn't a huge hit. In about 1972, my older brother gave me a stack of 45s, and this must have been in it, because I can't remember hearing it for the first time.

I've heard this song so many times I thought 'Why cover that?'. Your version is gorgeous and now I know why. Was a time in the distant past when hearing a song like this was a rare treat. Your version is like that. And your playing looks effortless. Thank you.

Thanks for listening, and your kind words. Believe me, there's a lot of effort! If I continue to play it, I'll have it down in about six months.
It probably took 15 takes before I got made it all the way through without (too many) mistakes. That won't fly for a live performance.

Excellent rendition. Nice sweeps and double stops to liven up the melody. As you point out, very pretty chord progression in this tune.

Same progression as Lay Lady Lay by Dylan, and there's a song by great Seattle surf band King of Hawaii, but I can't remember the name.

I too, am surprised that some people hadn't heard the song before, but then I'm an old dude and I'm constantly surprised when the youngsters among us don't know some of the classic old songs. There was a lot of great (and not so great) music played back in those days.
While I'm no stranger to this particular song, it hadn't crossed my mind in years and this very nicely played version reminds me of what a cool song it is. I have added it to my "songs to learn" folder.

Should I upload the backing track? If I get time, I'll try and tab it out.

The Left Banke's lead singer Steve Martin Caro just died January 14.
Ferenc's version is a nice tribute.

That would be great.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

Very nice version of a great song. Yes, this song was released in July 1966, but really came into its own on the charts in the Fall, #5 on October 29, 1966 - in the Billboard Top Ten for 4 weeks, many more on the Top 100. I was a young classical piano player at the time, I have always loved this tune.

There are an enormous number of versions of this tune over the last 55 years. I've been doing a pretty slow version of this on both guitar and pedal steel for the last few years. It really lays nice on E9 pedal steel, and works OK in either a band context or solo. In hospital recovering from surgery right now, but I'll have to record and post this one of these days. Jim Cohen does a cool pedal steel mashup of this with Pachelbel's Canon and As Tears Go By - https://www.youtube.com/embed/nNPDA4Bg4ow - and Johnny A did a real nice slow version on his "One November Night" CD:

"Should I upload the backing track? If I get time, I'll try and tab it out".

If you don't mind uploading the bt, sure, I'd be happy to have a backing track to work with. I'm not very good at reading tab though, so that might not be all that useful to me and I wouldn't want you to spend a lot of time on it.

Ah, I remember Walk Away Rene well as I was a High School senior in 1966 when it was released. The song got quite a bit of radio airplay back then, even in sleepy (at the time) Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Sadly, as beautiful as it is, it is not a song that seems to get much, if any current airplay on today's a oldies stations, at least not the ones in Atlanta and Kansas City I am familiar with that recycle the same fifty top 40 songs over and over and over....

Ferenc, your arrangement and playing are stellar and your version brought back a ton of memories from what was a MUCH simpler time. Maximum kudos!

I will echo what has been said above, it is a beautiful tune and your surf arrangement and performance of it is wonderful!

I would be grateful to have the backing track and I am not too proud to use the tab, should you find the time to provide it.

My story of the song is that I don't remember hearing it while growing up or in college in north Alabama. I was in my mid-twenties, working in Dallas Texas, when I first heard it on the radio during my daily commute. It must have been a favorite of the station's programming manager because it was frequently in the rotation. It was also during that time and on the same station that I first heard "Along Comes Mary" by The Association, also in frequent rotation. The two songs, with "Renee" and "Mary" either coming or going, are indelibly linked in my memory. I can't hear one without thinking about the other. Many thanks for stimulating these pleasant memories of them and for sharing your video.

Thanks for posting the tab Ferenc. So far I worked through the first verse and chorus from the video. The tab will help speed things up. I plan to ad this to my solo set list Thumbs Up

Thank you Ferenc for taking the time to put this together and thank you Brian for getting the track online. Now I just have to carve out some time to work on it. So many songs, so little time.

MC - if you don't mind I'd like to send you a PM with some questions about your solo set.
