This blonde very early ‘63 Bandmaster (some components are ‘62) just arrived from the vintage section of the Hollywood Guitar Center. It has a replaced OT and speakers (Jensen brown/gold labels). Put the tubes in, hooked up the cab, let her warm up, plugged in, and basically cried from what I heard. She’s a keeper!! Merry early Christmas to me!

Congrats! An amp like that couldn’t live in a better home than one belonging to a surf guitarist.

Thanks guys! Yes, it is surf heaven!
The amp next to it in the pic is my rehoused and modded 68 Bassman. It was a gift from my wife. It came as a 1x15 combo but I rehoused the chassis in a Mojotone shell for head/cab option. I also switched the speaker (it came with a Weber Chicago) to a Weber California. It’s been aesthetically Brownfaced as well. This was a project of Pete Cage (amp guru located in Maryland). The bright switch on the bass channel has been modded to a tweed circuit. Very cool amp!

Congratulations on the wonderful acquisition!
On a side note - finally someone who directly has had a comparison between the Weber Cali and Chicago, can you please elaborate, as far as your ear can tell, what's different?

Thanks! The Cali is that beloved JBLish Fender sound we all know and love. The Chicago I believe is a copy of a high wattage Jensen. The Chicago has all the mids in the wrong places for surf; pretty darn honky. I think it’s much more suited to blues and classic rock. Switching to the California was a great improvement.

Thanks for the reply, kentano2000. Seems about right. I paired a Chicago with my Blackface Showman, thinking it will tame the highs a bit and accentuate the mids to make it somewhat more brown-ish. Works well I think, but I was still wondering...
Either way, enjoy!

Excellent! Welcome to the Brownface Bandmaster club! Did you change the grillcloth or did it come that way? The vibrato on these is soooooooo wonderful!

As much as I loved my 63, last week I installed some NOS 50's Westinghouse 12ax7's in V1 and V2 along with a new TAD 7025 in the PI. It's even nicer!

Oh, nice! BTW, does anyone know what this tube is? It’s in v3,4,and 5 of this amp.

Granted this other thread is talking about the 15" speakers, anytime I see/hear conversation about Cali vs. ____, I always remember this thread. Spoiler alert... Cali! Cali! Cali! ....er, crap. Chicago! Chicago! Chicago!

edit:
PS, I haven't tried any Weber speakers that I know of, so I don't have a horse in this one either way, just thought that other thread was relevant to the convo.
PPS, More importantly, Congrats(!!!) on your score - looks killer no matter what speakers ya like!

Gut shots update! BTW, anyone have an answer to my 12ax7 pic a few posts ago?
The markings on your tube are Realistic LIFETIME. Some say it's most likely a RadioShack branded Matsushita tube which is fine, or a GE tube which is better. The best thing is that they're still under warranty (lifetime). If you bust one, RadioShack will replace it!
Excellent info, thanks Frank! Is Radio Shack even still around?! LOL!
