Wow, it's been five months since I was last on here! Anyways, do you guys think that Ibanezes work well as surf guitars?

Gabe

Our beaches here get 3 foot tall waves, but it doesn't matter. You don't need to surf to play surf.

The Ibanez Talman with 3 single coil pickups should work well. The models without a single coil pickup seem less suitable.

I recently picked up a an early example of the Ibanez AFS75T (first run had more ornate, pretty inlays), fully hollow thinline, single cut. Has humbuckers. Excellent Bigsby type trem. I subbed in an unused solid bridge, the "Serpentune", intonated solid brass, from one of the cool guys over at gretschpages.com

The new bridge fit perfectly, put this guitar into surf contention for me. Middle p/u position with plenty of volume, this Ibanez really cuts. The trem is stable, and with the new bridge, the whole body seems to resonate as you use the trem. You can hear and feel it. Would not be a standard choice for surf I guess. would love to hear how it does. A very capable instrument for low money.

To me, there really aren't any rules as to what makes or breaks a good "surf" guitar. Run with it if it feels good in your hands and achieves the sounds you are wanting to hear!

The old Ibanez Talmans with the three lipstick pu's (the were "Sky" brand pu's designed by Kent Armstrong) and Strat vibrato are killer surf guitars.
The first generation Talmans had the composite bodies but eventually switched to real wood. The early Japanese made Talmans were great guitars, composite or wood.
