That's a roundabout way of asking about mics! Get a Shure 57. It sounds great on a lot of things, isn't expensive and will last forever. I wish you good luck on your exploration of home recording, and being a fan of Joe Meek will serve you well.

My band have part-recorded a song called Joe Meek Shall Inherit the Surf. Need some organ for it. And probably a new name now!!!

Ferenc is correct, that an SM57 will cover most of the bases you have mentioned perfectly adequately. The Audix i5 is a somewhat similar mic which some people prefer to the SM57 (there's a rather technical discussion of the differences and similarities here).

The two mics are much the same price in the UK too. You did mention durability and it is certainly true that the i5 has a more durable construction (specifically the grille is metal, rather than the plastic of the SM57). I'm not trying to put you off the SM57, by the way; I have and use one myself and don't own an i5, although I do use them at work sometimes.

Be careful, though, or you'll end up deciding that you need another mic to cover something else and another to cover yet another thing and on and on it goes...

No, if you've already part recorded the song, keep the name. I enjoy making up daft puns, so I'll no doubt think of another monicker for my virtual band eventually. The main thing for me is getting the Tascam and the mic and learning a bit about home recording. Fortunately, I have an absentee landlady and don't own a shotgun, so I'll hopefully be able to avoid the late, great Mr. Meek's tragic fate whatever the outcome!
