One good thing about instrumentals is there are no words (duh) to distract from the music. With an instrumental cover of a vocal song, I usually end up singing the vocals in my head, which defeats the purpose.
For Los Straitjacket’s version, which I like, of My Heart Will Go On, I’ve never heard the original vocal version, so I can enjoy the instrumental as it is.
The killer thing about doing a surf cover is that you aren't trying to compete with the original vocal track which could have been incredible. Why set yourself up for failure which millions of vocal bands do.

Covering classical music themes in surf style works well. Audiences enjoy the familiarity, no one feels that a vocal is omitted, and I appreciate the content and opportunity for expressiveness and variation. I've recorded rearrangements of pieces by Pachelbel, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Rossini, Schubert, Grieg and Mendelssohn.

I was wondering how well Classical has held up though, many radio stations have shut down that featured it or switched to talk radio etc, many orchestra's are backing up rock tours now or being help by classic rock groups using them on sessions, tours or just local shows etc to pay bills or support the orchestras, many players are volunteers even.
But the idea sounds cool, Big band already did that 80 years ago, many hits from back then were just reworked classical pieces or new songs made up from parts of the classical scores etc.
To tell everybody the truth I wonder how well any kind of music has held up in the information age, too many distractions now, even at festivals I see more people watching skate boarding competitions then the watching the bands on stage. Everybody making video's texting while walking or even on bikes, I see that all the time now, and I don't think their on any bands Facebook page either. It seems like all the new music is mindless autotuned Euro-Vision dance music to me, even DJ's.
But I think the Idea of covering the 1980's vocal hits is a good one, might bring surf up to date maybe, but there again look how many waves of surf bands since 1980. Should today's Surf bands cover those bands instead ??? Dunno There is so many original surf instrumentals now over the last 10 years even.

Last time I checked classical music represented about 1 percent of music sales.

The Coconauts did an instrumental version of the Charles Aznavour 1973 hit, "She." Vegas (Terry Hall and Dave Stewart) did a great version in the 1990s and Elvis Costello also covered it among many others. I love playing it live and we do it in the Skipjacks. Such a beautiful tune!

We used to play a high energy version of this one and it does surf well but if the crowd was predominately under 50 it didn't go over well so we dropped it.

Ah, The Outsiders, one of the few vocal groups I bought LP albums of back in the 1960s. The organ made "Time Won't Let Me" (rather like "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians). So I take it your band included an organ and did several other songs with prominent organ. Maybe Green Onions and House of the Rising Sun?

No organ. I played the rhythm part with heavy reverb emphasis for transposing the horn parts. I think we did a pretty killer and lively version and we may pick it back up for the older crowd shows. Younger people don't recognize it or if they do, don't care. I think the song kills!

Maybe bands should grab a acoustic guitar cover Katy Perry and Taylor Swift instead. I wonder what "I kissed a Squirrel" would sound like through a tank. lol
I have no idea what young people like now, or if their into music at all. It just seems like they walk around with I-Phones in hand, It could be music on there but I can't here what it is.
I was in a college town club last year, and it was all old guys like me in there, nobody under their 40's (Or at least looked that old to me). In a college town no less. Do kids even go out anymore? That's the growth segment of music. I forget that Rock really is a oldies market now. Much like Big Band was in the 1970's. Its old peoples music now. I see classic Rock piled up in Walmart's cut out bins all the time now. I'm wondering how much longer rock has, because big band stations died out in the 1980's and went to talk radio. The New Wave stuff is oldies format now. I just went to a festival this summer. All old people there like myself, the turn out was lame as well.
