My buddy has posted no pics which tells me he got blown out of the water. There was a partscaster copy of 0001 that was in the 1500.00 range that he wanted. I bet it went for big bucks!

It ended up going for 75k!
The Vox Guit-organ went for 70k
And the '55 goldtop went for just under 400k

Crazy prices, but I did expect the Black Strat to fetch a really high price - it's a huge part of rock and roll history. Also, there's got to be a ton of people out there with money who were Pink Floyd fans back in the day and can afford to snap those guitars up (how much money they had back in the 70s would be a different story).

I'm pretty sure those people don't play Surf Guitar for a living either.

It's the top one percent that has money to burn like that. Its a investment many times for them, like buying paintings etc.

In a way it reminds me of religious relics that were being sold back in the Middle Ages.

Amazing story! Truly the stuff that dreams are made of. On a more realistic note for me, after many years since that one APSMF, I'll be seeing you at Howler's on July 27. Been FAR too long.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Victor, thank you SO MUCH for sharing all this!! What an incredible story and even more incredible experience!!!! Just reading your account of it gave me goosebumps! Yes

I've never been a huge Floyd fan, though I do like a fair amount of their stuff (the Wish You Were Here album is my hands-down favorite by them). But I greatly admire Gilmour's playing and musicianship, he's really quite amazing - and in fact, love his solo albums, which I prefer to all Pink Floyd (their major advantage, IMHO - no Roger Waters, who I find pretty unbearable!). His solo debut, About Face and On An Island are all excellent albums. And just in case you didn't know (though you probably do), on his debut solo album, the opening track is an instrumental - Mihalis. Gilmour said the beginning of it was his tribute to Hank Marvin, he was emulating Hank's tone and playing, before switching to his own, heavily overdriven tone and style. Linking it below, check it out if you haven't heard it before, such a great track!

I'm also enough of an admirer of Gilmour's that last year I bought the book devoted to his Black Strat, and devoured it! It's a freakin' blast, but then, I love any book devoted to the Strat! Big Grin (Now out of print and fetching collector prices, though affordable copies still pop up): https://www.amazon.com/Pink-Floyd-History-Gilmours-Stratocaster/dp/1423445597/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=black+strat+book&qid=1561128768&s=gateway&sr=8-1

This whole auction was just remarkable. I think it raised more than $21 million, breaking all sorts of previous records for guitar prices and auctions. How cool that you were able to be a tiny part o this historic event! Thanks so much for sharing again!

I just realized I saw Gilmour play that Strat at the Hollywood Bowl on the Dark Side of the Moon tour. It had the white pickguard then. They sounded better than anyone I had heard previously, the guitar in particular was the best live guitar sound. I don't recall Roger Waters even singing that night because he didn't really start that until after Dark Side.

I think its the same Black Strat from the 1971 Live Pompeii movie, it had a white pickguard than too - so it must have been replaced sometime after that I guess.

That is a freaky video too with no audience and playing in a 2000+ year old Roman Amphitheater like that.

Legend has it if you play Dark Side of The Moon starting when the MGM Lion Roars in 1939 The Wizard Of Oz movie. The two magically sync together. I actually tried this years ago and is a pretty cool experience. The band denies they used the movie to make the LP like many claim ???? not sure how that came about though or who came up with that idea. lol Laughing

Stellar! Set the controls for the heart of the interstellar overdrive!

Careful with that axe, Eugene;)

Ivan, thanks for posting Mihalis. used to listen to it all the time, but hadn't thought about it in years. strange how some songs drop away like that. in a way it makes them extra special when you first hear them again.

hadn't really thought about how tied to Animals that song is, ...though that is my favorite of the three mid 70s records.

my favorite Floyd record may be ummagumma. also always liked "obscured by clouds" and "More," ...not necessarily more than any of the early records.

I guess I was mistaken, Gilmour also had a rosewood neck Strat that I saw him play, it was the same tour as this photo, playing Dark Side of the Moon before the album was released. This thread has got me listening to Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother this morning.

Pink Floyd live they could be a very raw, loud and exciting band, often carting their quadraphonic sound system to relatively small venues - BBC 1971

Note the EMS Synthi Hi-FLi in the photo (white unit on a chrome monopod) The worlds first multi-effects unit, only 350 ever made.

GREAT story!!!! And I would NEVER, ever expect that I could ever come that close to such cool relics as those.

That is the same Strat that sold in the picture above. Gilmour bought it stock in 1969 and changed it up a bit with a new neck and p/g.
