Permalink jaguar pickup options???

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

looked through the forums, couldn't find exactly what i was looking for so figured id start a topic.

im needing to replace the original pickups in my jaguar. its a 62 reissue the pickups are very weak and shrill. very little bass, lots of highs and no push. i mean they are great if your doing classic beach boys or ventures stuff but any modern surf songs they are severly lacking.

my deal is ive found a few different manufacturers who make Jaguar pickups. i want to know your experiences and the pros and cons of each.

ones i know about

Seymour Duncan
Fralin
Loller
Klein
Rose Pickups
Creamery
Kinman
Novak

The Fender AV'65 'Pure Vintage' pickups are the only way to go.

If you don't go that way, avoid anything with Staggered pole pieces. Duncan seems dull and Lollar seems sexy, but Duncans are every bit as good. Novak makes a good pickup. Rose pickups, avoid. Creamery, avoid.

So great to read a post like ^^^^ THIS ^^^^ again!

Seriously made my morning.

Yes, a good read. I have a Jaguar Classic Player, not so popular with some but I like it. The pickups are described as hotter than original but not sure that's a good thing. Anyone have thoughts on these pups, good or bad?

Hi, I just purchased a Squier 70s Jag. It hasn't arrived yet, but it sounds like the 65 Jag pickups are the way to go? What would you say sets them apart, sound-wise?

They give you the classic surf sound - no harshness, clean, full, warm and expressive. Also the price can't be beat, compared to customs.
Hi Jake, missed you!

Hi Jake, missed you!

Thank you! Obviously I haven't had a chance to check out how the Squier 70s Jag sounds yet, but I'll seriously consider upgrading to the AV 65 pickups if the Squier pickups seem lackluster.

I had a Squier VM Jag that I bought used with the AV '65 Pure Vintage pickups already installed.
It sounded perfect, the pickups had great dynamics and sensitivity, clear but not harsh, they just sounded "right".
I've had a lot of experience, like many others here, with actual vintage, aftermarket and boutique replacement Jag pickups and I think you'd be hard pressed to beat the AV '65 Pure Vintage.
Now if you wanted something hotter...that's a different story.

Cheers,
Jeff

There were a few features that I liked about the Classic Player, dunno if a pickup swop would make smile or sneer. Often, there's something you miss about the way the guitar was, even if it was shitty.

I guess no one here's had much experience of the Classic Player. One day, I'd like to experience the AV 65's

Av65's are the way to go. Definitely upgrade pots and cap while you're at it if you have a Squier.
And great to see you in the neighborhood Jake!

I just ordered some kinman jaguar pups
Ill see how they sound when i get em in

I ended up buying the AV65s even though I haven't played the 70s Jag yet. I got it for under $300 shipped, so I figured I'd splurge on the upgrade.

Good for you both!

I thought the same. They seem to have a good reputation here in the the UK , Wondering if he'd heard them in 'real life'

I think that the AV65 Fender pickups are the best deal out there.

I'd avoid creamery because the name reminds me of tortured animals and jizz.

I see. Maybe that's a selling point for some players. Creamery also has a lot of options, but all of them are quite expensive. I have the Fender Pure Vintage '65s and I'm extremely pleased. They're a dream come true.

And funny that the new Fender Jaguar V-mod pick ups weren't even mentioned above as a possibility.
