Permalink "Shark" build

New Topic

I recently posted a Jazzcaster build here, and now I'm working on another guitar.

I've built several guitars over the years, but all were based on existing designs. I decided to design my own this time around, called the "Shark". I hope you see what I'm envisioning in these photos. This will have two GFS Surf 90s which I've used on other builds, and I really like them. A CV50s Tele neck & tuners- it's a beautiful quartersawn one I found on Reverb.com, a vintage Strat trem by Kluson, Alpha pots, Orange Drop cap, 3-way toggle and bevel-top knobs. Color will be Stew Mac Sonic Blue lacquer, with should look nice with the vintage tint on the neck. Here's what's going on so far:

Sonic Blue should look pretty nice with that vintage tint neck:

More to come...

Cool project!

Pretty please give it this paint job:

That's a pretty great idea- I could do Sonic Blue with a black burst like those Mako Shark Corvettes. Hmmm....

Awesome design!

Fun project!
Yes, please keep us posted on your progress.

Very cool - I like seeing an original body shape. If you did a custom neck, you could add a little fin on the headstock to mirror the one on the body (but that tele neck is really nice).

Made a lot of progress the last couple of days. Set scale length, carved belly & fin cuts, drilled all mounting holes, routed control cavity & drilled cable route, sanded to 220 and getting ready for some vinyl sealer followed by an undercoat of white lacquer. The neck fits nice & tight and is aligned perfectly.

After sealing with Behlen vinyl sealer, I sprayed some white lacquer as an undercoat for the Sonic Blue; I wasn't sure how well the blue would cover the wood color variations. Should be painting the blue tomorrow.

Man!!! That curve for the elbow relief wasn't evident on your outline sketches, but sure looks great now, and is gonna help make that shark fin stand out and look ohhhhh sooooo sexxxxxyyy when it's done...great build, really enjoying the progress pics!

Sonic Blue on. I'm still considering Redfeather's Corvette Mako Shark paint scheme before I start laying on the clear coats; just have to try some layouts to see how it looks.

I think I'm sticking with my original vision, plain Sonic Blue. I usually regret changing plans midstream.

Just finished the jack plate:

Sonic Blue is a fantastic color.
I always shoot a white undercoat for Sonic Blue as well.
It creates a "softer", lighter blue.

Ice Blue metallic would have been cool too. The small metal flake would have shown off your contours.

Great looking and well executed build!

Jeff

Sonic Blue is a lovely color in its own right. This just means there can be a Shark II!

I've already got my next build planned, a VOX Phantom 6-style with Jazzmaster pickups & trem. I'm a sucker for the asymmetrical shapes of those Phantoms.

Need some wiring help- any pros here? The setup on this guitar is:

(2) GFS Surf 90s
master volume
master tone
LP-style 3 way toggle (Switchcraft)

I've never wired an LP toggle, and the Surf 90s have the 3-wire Kwikplug system, so I'm all confused. Any help or some kind of diagram would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Tqi, that's very helpful. I also found this online; what do you think?

First of many clear coats going on:

Beerbelly, that wiring diagram you posted would only work if you had metal-braided shielded wires, like in old Gibsons.
