Just picked this up at my local book store (please get it there is you can, Amazon doesn't need your money)

great stuff, just read the chapters on Leo Fender and Dick Dale (plus some other surf legends) and felt the need to alert you all

nice review below,

Just reading this now, it is so good!

"Dick Dale meets Dennis Lehane"

Im having a tough time getting past the premise/ marketing line 'recreates the rivalry between the two men who innovated the electric guitars amplified sound -Leo Fender and Les Paul-and their intense competition to convince rock stars like the Beatles , Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to play the instruments they built '
I'll pick up a used copy to see if the writing is more factual than the marketing . There's a lot of myth surrounding both guys as far as what they actually did and didnt invent , and who is responsible for making them popular instruments .

I read it last year, really enjoyed it, ArabSpring--
it's way better than the description you read!

Yeah, of course a person needs to have a good marketing hook, but it's really solidly written and appears pretty exhaustively researched.

Ordered my copy. I remember hearing Dick Dale interviewed by Terry Gross. A lot of the conversation was about interactions with Fender and how to get the sound Dale was looking for. Interesting stuff.

I just found Terry Gross's interviews with Dick Dale here: https://freshairarchive.org/guests/dick-dale

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.
Bringing instruments back to life since 2013.

It's a great book, and highly recommended.

Matt- kudos to you for digging up an old thread!
