Does your band cover Apache? I was brought up hearing the Jorgen Ingman version which was the popular version in the US. My wife actually still has on 45, but it seems most are more familiar with the Shadows or Ventures versions. I didn't realize the Shadows pre-dated Jorgen by a year until now. Anyone have any links on their band playing this cover? I'm especially interested in the bass-lines, as they are all different.

When Apache was a hit what people commented on as fun--and listened for--were the whistling arrows and the slapback delays in the gallop. The Shadows' recording doesn't have these.
These differences are improvements by Jorgen (rather than omissions by The Shadows) because Jorgen's version was later. These improvements feel important.
There are other differences. The first time through the main verse Jorgen plays a counterpoint riff that the Shadows do not. This riff does not mesh with chords and bass guitar the Shadows play during this section. There is no guitar strumming or bass note in this riff section on Jorgen's recording, only percussive sounds, so meshing is not a concern. This is a basic difference in the chording corresponding to the melody guitar between the two versions.
The second time through the main verse Jorgen omits the counterpoint riff.

RoarShark covers Apache. It's closer to the the Ventures version (from "The Ventures play Telstar"). Hope you find some useful/interesting bass lines

This is the first song I played in front of an audience. One thing I've observed over the years is, that mostly, no one knows how to end it (without a fade out)

Both excellent versions! I can hear the Jorgen Ingman influence in the Roarshark version and the Shadows in the Surfasaurus version. It's funny how contrasting they are...one being more laid back and reverby and the other faster with more attack, but both stand on their own nicely. Thanks for sharing.

Great topic and I enjoyed thoroughly the versions posted by RoarShark and the Spiratones, not to mention the four vintage recordings posted at the beginning of the thread. I don’t know that I had heard Burt Weedon’s version before.
My own experience with this song was mainly the Ventures version, which graced the family’s record collection and got plenty of play on the old portable Motorola. When I play it, I end up with a mix of the Ventures, Ingmann’s and the Shadows version, plus whatever comes to mind while I’m playing. Truly, all three versions have a lot to offer.

Ingmann's approach is the model for my recording linked to here, with arrows, bass guitar strikes on the first 3 beats of each measure, and gallops with prominent tic-tics and delay slapbacks. I changed the counterpoint riff to mesh with the chords and added a compatible ending.
The recording uses strong deep bass tom-toms and bass guitar. To hear them speakers or headphones that reproduce bass well are needed.

As I mentioned in my PM and wish to post here, the drive of this version is excellent. It’s got such a strong sense of movement. I could see this being used as background music in a movie scene where something important was being mobilized.

Thanks, Synchro, for your thoughtful insight. The primitive drum pattern fit the song concept. The bass guitar meshes so I while listening can't separate bass guitar from drum kit.

Sounds like high reverb and little to no delay, so it differs from the two landmark versions from Europe. The tones are pleasant and the approach is relaxing, and I enjoyed it.

I will forever love this song. Although Par Avion plays it from time to time, I cannot say that our bass line is terribly unique. What is fun, however, is doubling or tripling the length of the "gallop-like" part and using it as a outdo over which I improvise. This simple touch changes the song quite a bit or at least I feel that way ;)

Yeah I like this song too ...Seems like all Shadows songs are in A minor ...I tried to play along to their Hits album and if I remember right every song but two was in A minor and only a few new songs were some other key etc . . .Every song was played on different parts of the Am scale etc but they must have dedicate their career to A minor scale. I always thought their music had a sound to it, not realizing it was all the same Key.
