Permalink Surf and hi hat

I don’t know why, but I associate classic surf and instrumental with strictly ride cymbal and never hi hat. Show me a couple classics with hi hat beats. Also, looking to get out of a little writing rut by hearing some newer surf beats other than the three or four I always use.

Guitarist for Black Valley Moon & Down By Law

Yeah, I have a similar association but here's one example, albeit brief.

One thing I think this song illustrates is Delvy's skill at keep things varied. He keeps changing his beat through the whole song.

I get tired of that same typical surf beat and generally welcome different approaches, as long as they're not modern rock beats. Can't stand that in surf.

I think you might be well served to check out jazz drummers for inspiration. Those cats are good at keeping things fresh!
