Tqi: Is it morally acceptable to use a Radial capacitor in a 1960 amp design?

synchro: TQI, morality is a huge question and capacitors a deep subject. I say do it and don't tell anyone. Smile

hey ive been lurking a while and finally joined and since none of my friends care about gear i figured i'd show yall. i had been wanting my birth year for a while but people wanted high dollar for them. i found a great deal a couple weeks ago and it got stolen out of the guys car before he shipped it, so then i was on a real mission to buy one and found one on craigslist in nashville. so it was an event the past couple weeks, but now i got an 82.

Enjoy.

I was debating whether to say something about this, and I really hope I don't upset you - but I don't think that body is an '82. The neck DEFINITELY is - that's the headstock that appeared on the so-called "Smith Strat" AKA Standard Stratocaster introduced in December of '81, and lasting until early '83. (These models are starting to fetch good money in the second-hand markets, BTW.) However, that model always came with a white pickguard and other plastic parts. The black pickguard and other plastic parts were discontinued by December of '81, as was the black color, I believe. I've never seen that neck on a body that looks anything like that, so my guess is that somebody combined the '82 neck with a pre-'82 body. Just thought it might be good for you to be aware of this (maybe even ask the seller about it.) Enjoy, though, I've heard great things about those necks!

no offence at all. its a player strat for sure. plastics, tuners, trem and pickups all been changed. good chance the body is an 83 as the neck is dated 12/10/82, but black finish is in the catalog in 82 and 83 as 506 black. whatever it is its a fun player.

pretty amp!

It definitely looks better with black plastics.
Shred it.

The great thing about strats is how easy and inexpensively you can dress them any way you want. My 78 started much like yours but today it has a tortoise shell pickguard and aged plastics. It could have a mint guard and look cool or even aged mat guard. This strat is not setup for surf but any strat can be cobbled into anything you want it to do!

Congrats on your new guitar!
Back in the mid 80's a student of mine had a black Smith era Strat.
I think he still owns it.

Cheers,
Jeff

OK, very good! Yeah, sorry, I was wrong about the black finish, I just don't remember seeing any Smith Strats with black finish (they're usually sunburst, white or sienna burst), so that was just speculation on my part - but the information about the black plastic parts being discontinued by December of '81 and the Smith Strat (which is what your neck is) only being equipped with white plastic parts comes from Andre R. Duchossoir's book on the Strat, which is highly trusted in the Strat aficionado circles. Anyway, glad to hear you're fully aware of what you've got and like it! Enjoy - as far as I'm concerned pretty much all Strats rule! Smile
