Wow. What a jerk. Taking the language and indignation of cable news and superimposing it on surf music is kind of amazing in a way. Not to get political, but if fascism begins with nostalgia than it stands to reason that one with an incurious mind and a passion for a revivalist music genre could develop protectionist attitudes toward said musical genre.
Read it in a Hank Hill voice and it's actually pretty funny. "What the hell . . ."
It's already been said above, but stay off Facebook. It's full of bad vibes.

Fortunately, none of the people, who have any influence in the contemporary surf music scene are like that! And that should tell you a thing or two, not only about the community, which is steadily growing and getting more productive every year, but also about the guy cited in the OP, whoever he may be. The people I know, who are actively promoting surf music by playing in bands, booking shows etc., want to get things done and are likely to stay away from people with such a destructive attitude. Why burden yourself with this stuff, when there are plenty of nice people around?

Yes, Simon, you are right.
I know, the most american people in the surf scene are very nice and friendly and helpful!
We also felt a lot of super nice support from our american friends everywhere!
Many people thanked us for touring California.
For me surf music means also positive power and positive vibes!

It's a bit sad to read some people are bothered by ethnicity or gender. I hope he reads this and reconsiders his position.

Has nothing really to do with the latest "-ism" or "-istic" pulled out of the dictionary in use for the week. The fact is there are jerks in all walks of life, in all shapes & sizes - fortunately well-balanced out by their opposites. Do not let a jerk live in your head rent-free. Just move on & play. Next.

Following his logic, is it wrong for an American symphony orchestra to play Brahms, Bach, Mozart, or Handel? It seems to me that music is a universal medium.

yeah right.... Just like 60's garagepunk is an American invention and not some kids with no skills trying to copy The Beatles and the Stones. Oh yes, the latter copied American blues, but how American is blues? It was a combination of African and Native American music, played on European instruments (guitars), please see Rumble, the documentary about Native American music, it is not only about Link Wray.
Just like some Dutch Indonesian bands played heavy instrumental rock at the end of the 50's all over Europe, with the Tielman Brothers as best example. No, it isn't surf, no there is no reverb... but hell, these cats rocked!
Want to see how good European surfmusic is? (Sorry, for this shameless self promotion)

This seems to be the typical rant of the ignorant bigot.
When things aren't going your way, blame others. Especially those different than you.
I don't think any of the American musicians he mentioned are having any trouble getting gigs due to bands from other countries.
Maybe if the Facebook poster tried writing some original music instead of playing the same set list of first wave covers for the last 50 years he'd find more demand for his band.

Someone needs to call Hank Melvin and tell him to knock it off. The Rolling Stones need to stop playing American blues. Keith Urban please don't play anymore country music. And that jerk Tommy Emanuel should stop all that Travis picking. Paul Simon shame on you for bringing third world music from the shadows into the light. Music is international, there are no boundaries.

Wow, that post is disgusting. Bigoted, isolationist, uneducated, and just plain wrong. I think everyone has pretty much nailed the narrow-mindedness of that fb user here on SG101.

Probably should have just left this on FB. This thread will soon derail into ugliness.
