Permalink NAAM Leak: New Fender Models

New Topic

Companies are always trying a new wrinkle on old concepts and Fender is no different I suppose. This story popped up on TGP...some new limited edition models, or more precisely, variants of existing models:

Pretty corny for the most part but the red one does offer something reasonably cool, being a Jazzmaster with 3 Jag pickups, essentially.

And the straight up Fender Les Paul is ballsy! I think I am most amenable to that one. Although it looks like it has a 25.5" scale, which seems odd.

I feel Fender's predicament, trying to exist in a time when it's so easy for people to just make their own custom guitars from a plethora of aftermarket parts available everywhere.

It has 22 frets, so it will likely be 24" scale length.

The Jag-Strat looks more like a Burns guitar to me.

Behold: guitar marketing in the postmodern age.

Squink Out!

The Jag/Strat in red with the horns has a devilish look about it. It should be called the Satan's Pilgrims model, though I'm not saying they would make any claim to it!

I feel sorry for Fender. Trying to copy what others are doing. They should stick with their tried and true guitar designs.
If they want to enter into the home-made look-a-like market, to get different sounds, they should do so with different body styles.
Sure everyone in the world probably has or had at one time a strat. But making a strat-jag just seems,,,,well sad.

The placement of the pickup selector on the Strag is horrible.

Yeah, it is the thing that screams fake most about these, like some amateur that couldn't be bothered just tossed it there.

My opinion, their ugly, just a collection of mix and match parts.

And why would they include the rhythm circuit switches at the top on a modern guitar? This does seem fake.

The Tele models seem more plausible to me, but look at the distance of the vibrato plate from the bridges on the Tele models compared to the Jag-Strat. That looks like a photoshop job to me.

Or would neck scale make that necessary?

These are fun, cool and some are ugly. Personally I'd take the Tele Master. But I've seen more convincing UFO hoax photos. The lighting is wrong. Particularly on the Jag Strat. The body is reflecting light from the side while the chrome parts are reflecting diffused light coming from behind the camera that the body of the guitar is not reflecting. That's why the edges look so sharp.

Yes! That and the silhouetting is kinda rough on all of them.
I would think that Fender would have a better photo editor than that.

I like the idea of the Tele Jazz model in Surf Green. If only it wasn't so fugly.

Lost amongst the goofy guitars pictured above is something I assume many members here will salivate over. The “American original” series, which replaces the “American vintage” series.
The best of the old, with essentially a modern radius fb and tall frets.

While I like that ocean turquoise/tort Jazzmaster, I’m not running out to grab one. My small space is overflowing with (cheap) hardware currently. The one thing I don’t understand, if you’re going to go all out and modernize some of the classics a bit, with the intent of keeping the best of both worlds, why not throw the masses a bone with a 22nd fret, so they can accurately play the solo to Tangerine?

Whenever I see deviations like this (real or not) I always think to Rickenbacker's business model.
They've tried a few updated or modern designs through the years but overall have stuck with what they are known for and have changed their product very little since the '60's.
Still made in USA, construction is the same, limited production and model range...
It's very respectable.

Cheers,
Jeff

Jumping ahead a bit here - So I guess we can all look forward to this:

  1. A full page ad in Guitar Player Magazine extolling these "new" (that's a stretch) instruments from Fender.
  2. In the same GPM issue as the full page ad above - a fully objective (ah-ha-ha) "bench test" or whatever the hell GPM calls it these days extolling the exciting merits and features of these
    Frankenstein-mish-mash-of-guitar-parts-but-nonetheless-truly-exciting Sleeping guitars.
To add to the boredom, look for these usual, tired phrases:
"Notes with sparkling clarity", "woman tone", "righteous", "tele spank"... etc.

GPM lovers - don't bother. You have your opinion; I have mine.

It's old news now but boy was my photo analysis wrong. I still maintain however that those photos were strange looking! They're also more than NAMM show concept pieces. The guitars are available for pre order now.

Moving forward, please direct any future Sasquatch or flying saucer snapshots to another forum user for authentication.
