Permalink Recommend an HB-sized pickup that beats the GFS 'Surf 90'

New Topic

Several years back I built a 'silk purse, or rather a gold lamé purse, out of a sow's ear' from a stripped Teisco 'tulip' plywood body and a matching neck. I had a HB in the bridge and wanted an affordable single coil p'up. I lucked out with a good-sounding GFS lipstick tube in the neck but really do not enjoy the lo-fi sound of the Surf 90.
Can anyone recommend a good HB-sized p'up that would go well with a thin-bodied toy of a guitar, and the lipstick tube in the neck?

P.S.
I see Ken Rose, whose Strat p'ups I like, makes a JM p'up in a HB case. $60 is a nice price too. Anyone experienced this model, the Mozart?

The Lindy Fralin P90s sound great.

Looks like a good option if the impedance isn't too different from the neck's. The polepiece design may be the ticket for the toy sized string spacing at the bridge.

I have a GFS dual-lipstick humbucker at the bridge in a Washburn Idol guitar. It is actually made from two single coil pickups mounted together and put in series. http://www.guitarfetish.com/KP--GFS-Pro-Tube-Lipstick-Humbucker-Pickup-Cool-Chimey-Tone-Chrome--Kwikplug-Ready_p_21831.html

On my particular guitar it sounds superb with the two lipsticks in parallel rather than the factory-supplied serial. However, I think there is something off with my wiring because with the two lipsticks in series (typical humbucker) highs are absent.

Anyway, a bridge double-lipstick humbucker should complement your neck lipstick nicely. I suggest a switchable coil tap.

Speaking of Ken Rose single coils, I bought three bridge Mariposa pickups from Rose pickups and they vary disappointingly much. One sounds so grinding--with an enormous peak near 2000 Hz--that it is not usable. The other two are fine. Ken won't reply at all to my emails asking what can be done about it.

Maybe a GFS double lipstick tube HB with the 9K ohm output, designed for neck position might compliment the low-output single foil. The Railhammer is rated 8K ohms, a somewhat better match.
Rose pickups site doesn't say how hot they wind HB sized Jazzmaster p'ups.

A Gibson 57 Classic HB bridge p'up runs at 7.5K ohms.

DC resistance is way on low end of the totem pole in predicting a pickup's behavior; pot values, windings (more/less), wire gauge (big/small) all have a role to play. To save words, there's a post on a pickup forum (the long one here) that may help. That post also has a link to their pickups that contains some additional values up front with some comments that may help correlate.
NOTE: Don't know them, not affiliated in any way. But it gives an example of someone who isn't afraid to post more than DCR.

Over time I've found that folks who only post DCR on the internet as their only spec either have a really good thing & are reluctant to share secret mojo, or are marketing someone else's stuff and don't know. You might want to just actually CALL some of these candidates, tell 'em what you're looking for, the guitar's particulars, etc., and see if they have something that might help.

Happy hunting. Smile

Any of the gfs retrotrons would probably do well.
They're hb's with toaster covers. You can get them in several different flavors and output levels. They're cheap too.

This isn't a low budget option but I've heard these (not played them my self) and they sound really good. I plan on trying out a set at some point.

I have a pair of Lollar Single Coils for Humbucker in my Eastwood Map, and they sound amazing. They break up nicely when I dig in, and will drop into most humbucker spaces without any routing. Highly recommended!

How about something supro flavoured? These guys have repros of them and the demos sound really great. Lots on YouTube but played by someone who plays really good. So that's maybe why they sound cool! http://www.roadhousepickups.com/pickups/supro-vista-tone

I know sometimes it's difficult to reach Ken Currie (the guy from "Rose pickups"). He is suffering from two things: His dad seems to be very sick / in the hospital, while his business takes off really well.

I had him custom-wire Jag-pickups and a tele PUp for me, and an important modification was missing. It took a while and a few PMs on S-T for him to reply, but once we had contact, he completely stood up for all he had promised me, which included his offer to send a complete new set of PUps on his costs - to Germany... without any discussion. I don't doubt his will to full service for a moment, even when times are rough on his family. I do understand you'd expect timely reaction to service requests, though. Just trying to give you the background.

Another affordable option is from Eastwood with their Vintage Voiced Single Coil pickups. Meant to be based on the supro single coil but standard humbucker sized

Vince, do you have a set of these? Maybe you can get a good tone out of them, but I struggled with mine.

I had a set if these in the afore mentioned Eastwood. For me, they were dull and lifeless, and didn't sound like the supros they were supposed to be replicating. Others may have a different perspective on them, but I replaced them after playing with them for about a year.

Lots of great suggestions, thanks to all.
At this point I would not want to reinvest in GFS p'ups.
I'm not even sure this guitar will ever satisfy compared to others - so dinky in many dimensions - so I want to keep the investment small. Used is a good option.

My experience with pickup winder Bob Brubaker was excellent. His copies of DeArmonds positively nail it. $70 each shipped - and he fit them into existing cases so I didn't have to modify my custom designed axe. Maybe he could do me another favor to suit this axe.

Rev, I know what you mean. I think I wanted to like them more than I actually do. I'm wondering about taking out the surf90s that are in my Twin Tone at the mo and adding the VVSC but you've made me think again. I'd like to give the vista tones a go though,

I've never had the privilege of playing through original supro pups, any thoughts?
