Permalink New Los Straitjackets CD

New Topic

Don't know if it's been mentioned here before but Los Straits have a new CD out. Instro versions of Nick Lowe songs. Kinda strange, since Nick is known for his catchy lyrics, but an early review was quite positive about what the Straits have done to Nick's tunes. Haven't heard it yet, but I'll be checking it out when I find it.

I have the lp, and think it is a great release. LS do their own takes on the songs, many that I haven't heard (not really familiar with Nick Lowe). Stylistically there is surf, bossa, lounge, rock and roll...vey 60s instro space age style. There are a lot of layers to the arrangements and, as always, the playing and tones are top notch. As a big LS fan this lp does not disappoint.

You might not be familiar with Nick Lowe, but you might be familiar with his songs, Cruel to be kind and (What's so funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding? are the ones most remember.

Happy Sunsets!

I do know some of the hits (the ones you mentioned), and actually saw him perform a free outdoor show a couple of summers ago in NYC. I'm just not that familiar with a lot of the tunes on the lp. Not knowing the originals certainly doesn't detract from these versions. If you like LS, you shoukd definitely seek this out.

BTW, the name of their new release is "What's So Funny About Peace, Love And...Los Straitjackets". Produced by Nick Lowe’s producer and collaborator, Neil Brockbank, who passed away on May 30. The cover is their "cover version" of Lowe's album "Jesus Of Cool". Released on Yep Roc Records, which has also reissued Lowe's back catalog.

This album is on Spotify

Apparently it's being played a lot in the UK by DJ Gideon Coe on radio BBC6.

Cool, they did an album of covers before and it included vocalists. Will absolutely buy the CD.

I got the US version Pure Pop for Now People and just ordered the LS album. I wish ol Nick the Knife woulda dressed for the photo shoot. Cripes he looks like Woody Allen.

I will buy the CD simply on the basis of having a readily available photo of an aged Oly white w/tort Jag to admire (top right photo on album). That is my dream surf guitar. If I ever owned one, I don't think I'd actually be able to play it because I would just stare at it. Funny thing is, I dislike the colour yellow on guitars and I dislike tort. Put 'em together and it's magic.
Sorry for that aside...

Oh you are making great points. There had to be guitar comments with so much to choose from and I fully support purchases based solely on personal obsessions that may have little to do with the main topic (I think it's the music).

To the whole point of IMAGE which Los S. has in spaydes; why couldn't Nick have some fun with this instead of looking like he's just got back a dicey report from the proctologist???

I mean, wouldn't something like this would be so much more fun?

If you're in the D.C. area, they are playing tonight with Marshall Crenshaw at Hill Country.

Sean

I think Nick Lowe's image is meant to be the ironic, sober non-wacky element as antithesis to the over-the-top gonzo-ness of Los SJ. Having seen video clips of some concert footage with them all on stage (Los SJ and NL), this seems to be consistent. And definitely to be an inside joke to those who know the original Nick Lowe album cover where NL is the gonzo dress-up dude.

THAT I would go see.
But.... stuck in the cow pastures of mid-Ohio, again.
