We just came back from a rockabilly festival in Venlo (Arny Zona's hometown, didn't see him though...). The first booth I ran into was a guitar shop, and I normally don't buy instruments on an impulse, but this one had a proper setup and it just followed me home. Just played it for a few minutes and I really like it.

Congrats! As a huge Dinosaur Jr fan I've always wanted one, but couldn't justify owning two Jazzmasters. Are you going to keep it stock or mod/upgrade it?

Well, stock would be fine for now I guess. I found it to be rather different than the strat I'm used to, so I'll let it grow on me before I take it apart.

What are the pickups like on the Mascis? I keep reading reviews that they are just P90s and nothing like any kind of Jazzmaster pickup. But a YouTube video I saw comparing the Mascis JM to the Classic Player JM didn't sound too different. Mascis may have been a little more aggressive, but it didn't sound like my old Wilson Bros. guitar that has a simple P90 in it.

They're not like the pick ups of a Squire VM Jazzmaster, which I found to be thin, tinny and dead. The Mascis' pick ups are best described as leaning towards P90, but brighter and punchier. From what I've read they're warmer the the classic Fender JM's. The P90's I have in another guitar are a lot warmer, but that has a different tone stack. I would say it's a bronze, bell like kind of sound, and so far it's the part I wouldn't think of replacing first. The bridge is the thing that bothers me a bit.

Is there a pickguard that fits without having to drill extra holes, etc.? Not sure I'm a Silver Anodized Aluminum kind of guy.

Congrats on your buy! Actually I was on the same festival and also played some licks on the guitar. Loved the playabillity, but hate the color! Don't like white, but the golden pickguards is a beauty!
Next time in Venlo, contact me for a beer or two

Congrats! I tried out a Mascis JM once, and it didn't quite fit for me. Glad it fits for you!

Thanks Arny, it's not the color I would have picked if I took it to the painters, but I guess it's part of the signature and it goes with the furniture. Next time we'll take a beer together, that's a deal. I go to Sounds every now and then, so I'll let you now, ok?

I've read some reports that a standard JM pick guard will leave a gap near the upper control plate. The cavities seem to be larger than normal. No reports about misaligned holes or anything.

I got one too about four months ago and am not a fan of gold. I took a chance and bought a$20 red imitation tortoise shell JM pick guard and it dropped right in. Hope that helps.

Its really bizarre to see him referred to as Joe.
I put the squier mascis pups in my mij jm, they're definitely way less thin, and much hotter than the antiquity2's that were in there before.

Congratulations! Incidentally, if you (or Gilette) decide to change the pickguard, I might be interested in a gold one...

Happy new guitar day! There is a J Mascis for sale locally, asking $250. Might have to a least check it out. Enjoy!
