Hey guys, I have been doing a little recording at home lately. I am using a 76/7 Princeton amp, Shure sm57 mic, Focusrite 2i2, Audio Technica M50x headphones, and for my DAW Mixcraft 8. I have noticed when I play rapid tremolo picking on the high E string, I can hear the "click" sound while wearing headphones. Is this normal? Didn't I hear Dick Dale say he wanted to hear that noise in an interview once?

Also, I have the mic right in front of the speaker, almost touching the grill cloth. I have noticed in some original surf recordings, it sounds like the mic is a little ways back from the amp. Where do you guys place your microphone? Thanks for your help.

If the DAW inputs are overdriven very briefly a click noise can result. This is not normal. A click can also be caused mechanically if the string hits the pickup or leaves the bridge (or saddle) and returns to strike it.

I've been playing around with Mic position lately for our new CD. I usually place the sM57 about 2-5 inches from the better sounding cone, then put a second mic about 12-15 inches away. Still not happy with the lack of the surfy guitar sound.

Clicking-pick technique, or per Squid overdriving DAW input.

I've done almost this very thing & real happy with it, although the close SM57 is about 3/4" off the grill cloth. However, it is not directly on-axis with the cone. It's angled in slightly, and about 2" off the center of the cone. That was arrived at simply by walking/sitting around the amp one day and answering the "where does this sound really good?" question.
