I'm sure there are more. I remember some AZ band's in Bob Dalley's book.

Purchased Dune Buggy, great stuff. You guys need to do a rig run down. I hear a B-Bender and Baritone in the stuff from "in the Studio"

Hey All,
In your request for a rig rundown, here is what I generally use for recording and gigs.

I play an American Standard Tele with a Parsons/White Bender installed. It is not vintage as I purchased it new about 16 years ago. Completely stock except for the bender and Sperzel locking tuners. It is what I use 90% of the time.

I have a '57 reissue Strat that has somewhat new Dimarzio (Area 57?) pickups installed. I use that the other 10% of the time.
The baritone stuff is played on a Fender Blacktop Baritone tuned B to B. Completely stock.

My main amp is a Custom Fender Vibrolux Reverb. Purchased new in '98. It has had a fair amount of modifications by Frommel Electronics to add more headroom and improve the reverb and the vibrato. It is loaded with Celestion G10 speakers. It is the only amp in both records.

I sometimes also use either a '68 Bassman head or a '67 Bandmaster head run into a Nerby cabinet with a Warehouse Guitar 12" speaker.

For effects I use compression, a reissue Fender '63 Reverb unit or a Boss '63 Reverb pedal depending on the schlep factor. I also always leave a Boost pedal on to push the amp a bit more. A little delay as well, always on. I have a Ventilator pedal for rotary effects and a Tube Screamer for dirt.

That's a lot but that's pretty much it.

Glad you all are enjoying the music. Please spread the word and keep in touch. Keith

Interesting stuff, Keith.

The Tele is perfect. It’s one of the first solid bodies and still one of the best. From what I’ve read about the LA session world, Teles were quite common in all sorts of music from that era. Hawaii 5-0, Tele. Munsters, Tele. If it twanged back in the Wrecking Crew era it was probably a Tele.

The ‘57 Strat is as cool as they get. I use a baritone occasionally too, a MIJ ‘66 Bass VI RI.

I’ve played the Fender CVR myself and while I liked it, there was definitely the need for more headroom and the stock reverb seemed a bit weak. I play either a Winfield Cyclone (think early AC 15) or a ‘68 Custom Deluxe Reverb which has a great take on the Fender Sound, but had too large of a negative feedback resistor for my tastes. I had it in to a tech for a reverb problem and asked him to piggyback a second NFB resistor in parallel with the OEM one. It was perfect. The headroom is right for a DR and I still have the cool tone circuit of the Custom channel.

Reverb is a sacred subject in these parts. It’s hard to beat a real tank. I had the Boss pedal, but a couple of years ago I bought a Catlinbread Topanga reverb pedal which is, simply, awesome, especially with an 18v power supply. It’s probably as close to a tank as a stompbox can get and it has the same controls as the Fender tank. It also has a clean boost preamp which can be used or ignored. I’m not much of a stompbox guy, but this one is very good. I love the real thing, but most of the time I drive a Mazda Miata to my gigs and take pride in playing with a single guitar, and amp, and one stomper.

Diggin’ your band’s stuff.

Just have Dune Buggy a listen over breakfast as soon as the wife left this morning. I put the dog out on the porch since he hates loud music. That left me free to crank the B Breakers while I drank my coffee - what a twang rush! I’m really impressed by this record which may be the strongest guitar record I’ve heard in many months. The playing is so dynamic and focused, and style very mature yet not the least stodgy. Very inspiring. I’ll share the link and hope to heck you are coming to the West coast sometime soon. I could see a double bill with the Insect Surfers or The Sadies. World class guitar slinging!

Squink Out!

Great find, Fritz!

BB, do you live in LA? I’m looking for a bassist who wants to do something Bakersfieldy-Burbankish.

Sorry to have to bear disappointing news, but these guys Surf the other ocean. Smile They harken from the city that never sleeps, or at least the immediate surrounding area.

It could be worse, imagine being a Surf music fan whom has lived in Minnesota, Colorado and Arizona. There might be some waves to Surf in Lake Superior and I guess you could torture the definition of surfing into covering skiing the Colorado Rockies, but the only thing one can Surf in my current digs are the Dust Devils. Smile

Keep looking, my friend. There are Surf Music fans hiding in places you’d never expect to find them. Players are out there too.

Hmm, Colorado, Minnesota, even Arizona...nah, there's never been any legendary bands from those states, not even in the 60s!!!...

All kidding aside, Bakersfield Breakers, I am thoroughly enjoying checking you guy out!

We're really glad you like the record!

Much of it sounds close to The Hellecasters, as in "The Return of The Hellecasters" and "Escape from Hollywood." The mild overdrive + the tele + the B-bender is partially responsible, but so is the playing. If you haven't heard The Hellecasters, they are 3 impeccable fingerstyle Nashville studio guitarists who take turns and perform duets and trios. Their albums are entirely instro.
