Found this via OSG and I was OMG. One of my favorite custom colors fades to this: "light lime green" color...lol. This is a beauty!!!

I have nearly the same one, also a `65. Also with matching head. It is a faded sonic blue. Sounds great. I played it in the studio last year when we recorded the "Astronauts tribute" album.
To the guitar in the auction: The pickguard looks not original to me. Maybe it is a very good aftermarket one? And unfortunately no trem arm...

Twang cheers!

I also thought the pick guard looks to be a "greened" reissue guard because it fits too good. I would expect an original to be very white and a little shrunken. No way of knowing unless one wins the auction. Love that color, though!

Would think if he wants to see its potential he'd post some gut shots.
That is definitely an interesting evolution of Sonic Blue, though.

I had a friend say that he thought it could have been ice blue metallic. I don't know. I still think Sonic Blue. I agree that he needs to include gut-shots. I sent a message this morning asking if that was the original p/g and haven't heard back.

100% Sonic Blue.

I think the pickguard is original. It has shrinkage, the dis-coloring is not uniform. Whatever aged that finish did that guard as well. Smoker likely had this and judging from the oxidation I'd also say this spent its time in a coastal town.

No red flags without seeing under that guard. I guess the only red flag would be that red flower. Maybe had some other red paint on it. Needs a fret crowning, maybe had a shit leveling at some point.

One would be unwise to pay over $2000 for that guitar without seeing under the guard. However, it looks straight enough to take the gamble to a higher price point if you are a dealer.

By the looks of it I'd say somebody waxed this thing a couple of years ago and it dried up rather yellowish. Or maybe the guitar was stored in a smoking room. I bet it will come of clean with some buffing and reveal the right color. Hmmm

Here's the response I got from the seller. Jacob is correct that it's the original guard. I am surprised the guard "greened" as only the earlier pre-CBS guards usually did so. Anywho, here's the response. I'd still like to see the guts.

"Just a little history of this guitar it was purchased in 1965 and stored in a closet. The hard case got wet and was taken out. The man that purchased the item gave it to his son which in turn sold it to use. We are the third owner of this guitar. All the parts on the guitar are original."

It is a pre-CBS guard. This guitar is either a late '64 or early '65. Clay dots on the side fret markers!

Pre-late 64 is what I meant. Fender started pearl dots in late 64 and celluloid (greened) guards were phased out to vinyl guards as well. I have read that celluloid guards were used into January 1965, but not later and vinyl guards would turn yellow instead of green. You are correct in seeing the side marker clay dots. I had missed that because I just saw the pearl dots on the fret board and assumed pearl also on the sides. VERY good catch, Jake! I now think you're also correct on the guard because upon closer inspection, I think it IS yellow and not green. I think the green effect comes from the body color and morphs into the guard, making it look green. I still want to see gut shots, but this is a VERY interesting guitar for sure! Thanks for your expertise, Jake!

It looks like there is a shadow on the end of the headstock (close up pic) where another flower was removed, so it seems they can be scraped off. The color looks absolutely right for a yellowed Sonic blue. It's fetching a good price so far!

$5400 sold

Kind of a fishy ad, imo. Who takes a guitar like that to a pawn shop, aside from someone who stole it?

It still happens... Not too long ago, someone brought in a 1965 Jaguar to a local guitar shop along a Roland cube. All beat up and nothing working. He sold the guitar and amp for $50. The guy working there did not know it was legit until he worked on it. He restored it and its his main guitar now.
