Permalink any help with good venues

New Topic

Is their a site or someone or someones out there kind enough to help me with venues to play at. Anywhere in the world. I want to make a master list for myself and others in the surf genre in Las Vegas or anywhere for that matter.

Thank you

a difficult request. perhaps within the music industry journals there's resources for such info, but I've seen none on the web.

Some bands like certain venues while another band won't like that venue. And not many surf bands play 'venues' we play bars, clubs, etc...

This may be a tall order. If we can get a list started to help people who don't live in your commmunity that want to tour there.
People can name any place that they have played and why or why not that place should be played at again.
I have been calling around looking for places in the midwest and the yellow pages don't help.
If a list like this is started and people keep updating it the thing might become a decent list to have. I also am in a surf band that plays everything from bar mitzvahs to headling casinos. I use venue for any place that music is played. When I get time I will be adding to it also.

Size of the venue
is it all ages
do they help with advertising
usual door charge
average pay for that area and bar
and other such things that may help

The easiest place I have ever dealt with. E-mail the owner and if their is an opening he will let you play.
Never a cover and you only get 50 bucks to play. Although their is always a crowd to sell merch to.
21+ no matter what even the bands have to be of age.

not a bad idea. Ive been doin this locally, in order to find places that will book surf at all; I look up the giglists form touring bands and locally active bands and see where they play and put that all in one file. not that much luck here though, but it's a good idea, albeit difficult.

Off Topic coming from the netherlands it never seizes to amaze me that you cant get into a bar legally 'till 21 in the states. it must suck to be 17 in be in a punk band in the US huh?

Wannes,
There are some places that are all ages.

and some will let the guys play, but have to go outside when they are not playing.

We're playing an all ages gig tonite. The club adds $2 ti the cover if you're under 21 and gives it to the bar.

Pollstar might publish one.

Also look at places booking Rockabilly and Psychobilly bands. They is always a huge crossover for mixing surf into shows of this genre.

Also if they feature Garage type acts. Surf will blend in some cases. If you are looking to play more Hot-Rod and Horror type stuff, you can jump into the punk shows. But I would recommend the horror punk (Misfits modeled band) shows over the pop-punk or thrash.

So, with that suggestion out there. You can now start using whatever the local free reader paper's music section to get a idea of what the clubs like to play and usually get a contact number. Most Reader type publications have a web counterpart that you can use to get the same info without having to leave the house.

Even doing a google seach for Venues by location can get some results. At least in California you will find some directory sites.

Personilties behind the booking staff are always going to be a mystery. Kinda of trial by fire thing here when doing the cold call for shows. I say always refuse the pay-to-play gig. The promoter needs to do his own job.

Hope this help.

That is true. Spending roughly 5 hours in two weeks outside of a bar just to get payed $10 sucks pretty bad.

I am super sweet
