A Sapporo and a spliff... my fave

You really have to pay attention to the ABV% on these beers.
Fortunately, most of them display them very well these days.
If you're a fan of IPAs as I am, a lot of brewers have been coming out with Session IPAs lately which usually taste really good but have a lot less alcohol content.

I'm a big fan of Founder's All Day IPA.

Me too Skeet.

February is IPA month at my favorite watering hole not far from the house. Several of us serious hop heads meet up there on Sunday nights to sample the offerings and do dinner (in that order). Here is a link to the IPA menu for Feb. Most of them were on tap, are currently on tap, or (hopefully) will be before March. There were approximately 25 IPA's on tap last night. Ah yeah......... Oh year and for the other "beer drinkers" they have 130 taps.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Great story, thanks for sharing. On your point about mistakes, even if they are disasters (like Adele restarting the George Michael song on the Oscars), they can make for special evenings and sometimes, just sometimes, they can be magic!

It really depends on the vibe, for me. At most I'll walk the fine line between loose and ripped, but I always keep it lucid, and that's really only for the hometown crowd, surrounded by friends.
Most the times just a beer or two to calm the nerves.
If the band is any place but home-sweet-home it's our mission to deliver and melt faces, so that's focus number one. Afterwards there's plenty of time to tie one on if you feel it.

I think the learning curve is much higher when it comes to performing surf as apposed to the years of playing classic rock, punk and metal. This is a different animal and physically requires much more precision notation wise. I've played in classic rock bands where performing with a little buzz now and then can be a nice break and help build a bit more intensity. Sometimes you can find a little magic because you aren't just going through the motions. The tempo is slower, the notes are sustained, the songs were memorized from years of listening. It's easy. Surf at this point in my playing just requires more focus, more practice, more effort so although I usually have a drink or maybe two to take the edge off a performance I always felt it on stage and didn't like it. I'm going to ride the nerves for the near future and deal with it. I think when you have the opportunity to deliver a sound and music to an audience that has never heard it you have the opportunity to do something really special. It's that important!

Ditto - and probably describes many.

That feeling is nothing different than most people who aspire to a certain level and are anxious about it. It can be found in all types of competition (and you're probably the harsher critic vs. the audience), as well as nerves when taking a "test" of some kind, whether it's for a professional certification, or a fledgling pilot sitting down with some grizzled ex-AF guy for orals or planning a checkride. It's simply because you inherently want to do well - that's a good thing.

Don't forget to breathe.

True that Wes! "you inherently want to do well"! I wanted to be a rock musian not only for the power and energy but it's that feeling you got the first time you saw your favorite bands. The lights dim, the stage is set and when the first notes hit there is a shot adrenaline and you are just blown away with the power. I chose surf because it is new to my area and has the ability to conjure up those feelings to a crowd that has heard it all for decades. It has all the power and energy of everything they liked in that past but it's new! I want to ride the confidence of that when I take the stage nerves or no nerves!
