I find this song so hard. I can play the actual notes just fine--it's coming in at the right time. What's the secret? I always loose track trying to count measures!
Then again, I'm playing along with backing track. Something tells me in a band setting you can communicate through those extended pauses. As you said: drummer leads.

I totally agree...a band would communicate those changes in a more natural way and reacts to one another. To me, Link Wray is all about feel and raw energy rather than exacting precision. I play 'Jack' with my group and it is understood that no two performances are identical (while hitting all the notes that actually make the song what it is). We don't take the approach that the drums lead, though - there are important parts for the drums to play. More of a push/pull between guitar and drums.

Cape Fear - Original (Agent Octopus) - We're still working out the kinks to this one, but I always love working out new material live. This one combines a lot of various styles I like to play.

We are totally autistic at playing The Wave, especially because the simple ABAB structure (so synonymous with #lizardsurf) gives room to really experiment with the tone.
When we play at the beach the song never really ends, and we can go on for hours contrasting the A and B sections. Enjoy the vid btw, I love a bit of Star Fleet on Saturday morning.

oof That is a tough question! I like a ton of the songs my band plays, but the two that immediately jump to mind are two of our covers: The Astronauts - "Surf Party", and Jon & The Nightriders - "Molokai Cocktail". Surf Party is probably my favorite overall. Neither are note for note authentic to the originals, we definitely have our own little flavor on it. 'Surf Party' is one of those songs that kind of invigorates me, no matter how whooped I am from our set.
EDIT-Another contender will probably be 'The Sheriff of Noddingham', by David Marks & The Marksmen, once we get that one down. Drums aren't doing anything TOO exciting on the original, but that main tremolo riff that runs throughout...Rick Flair style 'WOOO!'

DAMMIT. I have two more faves. Whenever I have covered for the other (and far more traditional) surf band in town, they play these two songs, and I can't decide between which one gets me more stoked:
"Malaguena"-Loosely based on the Bambi Molesters' version; and
"Super Rocket Rumble"-Man or Astroman.

Funny 'cause that's one that comes out whenever I ask, "so, how's my Strat doing today?" or giving more than a cursory look at one in the shop.
Also I've sworn that, if I'm ever back in a band situation, under NO circumstances is this one that the drummer counts off.

Hi Dad! The very song that set me on the surf/instro path.
My seminal surf song.

Mr. Moto here as well. I also almost always play Bach's "Joy of Man's Desire" during any given practice session.

Varies for me from month to month ......right now probably Rockula. Around these parts, except for me, nobody knows LSJ even exists. Go to the local guitar store and noodle around on this song always gets question "what song is that?"
