Permalink Getting Residue Adhesive Off Pickguard...

New Topic

So the protective plastic that covers the pickguard on a new guitar was not removed by the original owner and bubbled...and left behind a sticky residue(where it had bubbled) when I removed the plastic after taking ownership of the guitar.

So, whats the best chemical or remedy to remove the sticky residue. Already tried soap and warm water to minimal results. See photo, the residue is NE of the glare...

Can you use your thumb and elbow grease to get it off? Just really heavy rubbing with your thumb. That is what I normally do.

Goo-be-gone

If the guard is truly nitrocellulose, then use naphtha. Ronsonol lighter fluid should do it. If the guard is some other plastic, then either don't do this or do it very carefully.

Goo be gone will do the job, but be VERY careful not to get it on the guitar, especially if it has a nitro laquer finish. Ive seen it dissolve nitro laquer.

When I worked at Taylor, we sometimes used Turtle Wax to remove smudges from pickguards and finishes.

Bestine would work but perhaps not as well. Both Ronsonol and Bestine are similar alkanes but Bestine is primarily a larger molecular mass one. Naphtha is primarily pentane or a pentane-hexane mixture. It will dissolve the adhesive more readily and will evaporate much quicker than the heptane in Bestine. My two cents...

Thanks Trey, I retract my recommendation.

I use 3M adhesive remover for lots of items. Paint or auto parts stores will sell it. It's really good for removal of most items that are petro based. It won't work on water based, though.

Thanks for the recommendations and tips on solvents. Ended up going with Jake's suggestion and used my thumb and some elbow grease. It did the trick.

Oops. That was slightly pedantic.

I recently bought a guitar that was built in 2000 and it still had the plastic on the pickguard, and (after removing it from the guitar) tried all manner of remedies to clean up the guitar.... Goo gone, soap and water, vegetable oil, elbow grease .... Nothing worked so I ended up replacing the pickguard.

Good luck, but depending how old it may be better to just replace it and play it!

Should've used Naphtha. It's in your constitution, I believe, under "Zippo".

Do you have Mr Sheen spray wood polish in the
States? Can't say for certain if it is safe on guitars ( can't see why not but I guess someone might know!) Anyway - gets adhesive off loads of things in the UK!

My go to chemical is 91% alcohol that you can get at Walgreens for 2-3 bucks.I have used it for years and have never damaged plastic with it ever.
It will also remove Sharpie marker.Takes off sticker residue easily.Careful on fresh paint. no problem on poly finishes.Great as prepaint cleaner too.

+1 for Naphtha in Ronsonol lighter fluid. The squeeze bottle is very handy for application and it's readily available everywhere. We use lighter fluid in the book trade for removing price tag residue from soft covers as it does not bleed the inks and evaporates quickly.

Squink Out!

+2 for the lighter fluid. been using it on almost all surfaces for 30 years.
