I have to say, I was surprised that in the survey, Strats have overtaken Jags and Jazzmasters as the favorite surf axe! That is a big change from previous years on SG 101, when the Jag always ruled.
I personally like the Jazz for mellower surf songs, the Strat for heavier stuff. I love the Jazz sound, especially with both pickups selected. But the Strat has a great feel, and I especially like the Strat trem. So much so, I built a custom Jazzmaster with Fender American reissue pickups and a Strat trem. The best of both worlds!
I think owning one of the two "Surf" guitars plus a Strat is the best. If I had to keep just one, it would be a Strat. But, in this best of all worlds, I can have three guitars - a '65 Jazz, a custom Jazz, and a 60s-style Strat.

Yeah, what happened?
Maybe: Jag and JM lovers have an inferiority complex. They dealt with it on the old SG101 by overcompensating through being more vocal about their preferences and intimidating the Strat lovers?

PS And I totally agree about having at least one of the Jag/JM duo plus a Strat. I love my JM. In fact, I was inspired to pick it up just last night when I couldn't sleep....

More people here own strats and have no experience on the Jag or Jazzmaster. I think that is a big reason for the change. "I really get that vintage surf sound from my Squier Strat which I swapped the pickguard out before the plain white one wasn't surf enough."

You can't help but being a strat lover. You were born that way. Geneticists think they have pinpointed the abnormal gene that gives you the preference for the strat.

I'll bet you are right about some. on the other hand, some people chose the strat because of how Dick Dale, Jim Messina, the Atlantics and IvanP sound, not because of their own sound. some of those even played pimped squiers. some of those think that since the surfsound comes primarily from the tank, amp and speakers, getting a fancy offset before you have those things in order just shows your more concerned with looks and image than with sound. nothing wrong with that though.
my 2 cents

I thought Ivan at least had a Fender Strat?!?
Maybe just the preferences have changed since the 90s heyday when the Jaguar definitely ruled the world of surf music.

Picking a Jaguar or Jazzmaster doesn't mean your concerned with looks or image. That probably holds true in some new style of rock music,(whatever they call it today) but I think most surf guitarists wouldnt be so daft?
In a perfect world I'd have a Strat, Jag and Jazzmaster. I would actually like a '62 reissue AV Stratocaster.

Wait, I do... sh*t, guess it's a perfect world?
Although my strat is a '73. I too wouldn't mind having a '62 RI.

It really did rule the surf world in the 90s didn't it? Satan's Pilgrims, Finks, Treblemakers. And many more I am sure. I blame Ivan for making the Strat more acceptable.
I really dig the sound of the Jag. That is why I like it. It is also gorgeous. Same with my Jazzmaster. I've noticed my Jazzmaster doesn't have as much bite as the Jag.
I just can't get a good sound out of a strat. Our lead guitarist can vouch for that. He has an amazing '62 AVRI Strat.

The Jaguar is the daddy of them all better pickups, brighter, more output and killer tone and very versatile for all genres of music, The Jaguar is the instrument I have played through all my music ventures besides surf since 89' before that I played a mid 80s US Fender Strat from 85' to 89' after my first Jaguar I was hooked!!! I did play a Jazzmaster for a year but nah Jaguar that'll do
I dig the Mosrite but they are to dark soundn'
Strat's are great!!! after seeing my friend Eric of The Verb' play his I was in heaven, he told me he re-wired his to sound like Jaguar at the touch of his 3 or 5 way switch wow!
Jazzmaster, I owned a 63 , played it as my main axe for about a year but it just didn't do it for me
Here's my Wife Nadine with the 63
Here are my surfin' companions
Vintage 62' stamped date of 1 SEP 62B in mint condish
I acquired this piece in Hollywood, Ca from a private seller/collector in the fall of 2002
image
MIJ 1992 model this one has been overhauled an americanized down to the tuners the only Japan on this Jag is the body, neck fret wire and color.
USA parts:
US AVRI pickups, master control (pots & nobs, plate) upper controls (pots & nobs, plate) AVRI three slider and plate, AVRI mint green gaurd, AVRI floating trem, AVRI bridge and the last touch an AVRI Fender mute
image
This is my first Jaguar a 63 all stock even the white guard
I acquired this back in 1989 for a $100!!! @ a hawk shop in OC
traded 2 pedals and $50 cash with my perants blessing they did the
transaction for me I was under age and not 18 only in 7th grade
those were the days of good prices on gear and cheap but in 1992 Nirrrvaaannaa came into the picture these axe's got priceyyyyyyy
very $$$ even for MIJ jaguars

Here's my AVRI

Well, as our drummer says: it's surf music and it rocks, therefore - surf rock! We sometimes even RAWK! "I've seen a hundred faces, and I've RAWKED them all!!"

You guys (Jake and Wannes) give me waaayyyy too much credit (or blame, as the case may be). Here's the list of nineties Strat users in the surf world, none of which I influenced in any way:
Oldtimers:
DD (touring like crazy the entire decade)
The Atlantics (coming out of the retirement in late nineties)
Prog dudes:
Jim Thomas, the Mermen
the Aqua Velvets
Pollo Del Mar (both Ferenc and Jono)
Trad dudes:
John Blair, Jon & the Nightriders
Eddie Angel, Los Straitjackets
Lord Hunt, The Bomboras
Rip Thrillby, the Penetrators (yeah, I know he later switched to a Jag, but he played a Strat for a long time...)
Rick Mills, The Volcanos (later switched to a Jazzmaster)
Bill Epps, the Varatones
Michael Sellers, Langhorns
the Apemen
that's what I could think of off the top of my head. That's a HELL of a list of guitar players, many of whom I think are pretty influential in today's surf scene. I think they're (or were) using a Strat cause it's a great surf guitar, as proved by a LONG list of sixties surf guitarists using a Strat....

Hey, Jake, just because YOU can't get a good sound out of it, is that any reason to disparage the guitar? Talk about a genetic abnormality!! Actually, I do believe that a Strat is harder to play and get a good sound out of than most guitars out there - but if you put in the effort, you'll be rewarded with a more distinctive and personal sound. And it'll sound HUGE!

Very true I mean it goes for any kind of guitar model if it be Gibson, Kramer, Fender, a metal axe it's not the guitar persay it's all on how you play the guitar not the amp or guitar but the person playing the guitar
If you ever notice that every single one of us here has thier own personal trait and playing style that no matter what guitar you pick up it'll sound like you everytime maybe a bit different from guitar to guitar but your feel is still there and style there's no escape

Kyle,
Love the pic, but I gotta call to question your mention of Mosrites being too dark. I find that mine cranks and is much brighter than either my Jag or JM. What led you to that statement?

Yeah, I was wondering about it, too...all the Mosrites I heard were bright.
Man, if they made a 25.5" Jag, that might have been my favorite guitar.

Man, if they made a 25.5" Jag, that might have been my favorite guitar.
I borrowed a 65 vintage mosrite for a few months I did get that Ventures/Dr. Lehos sound but the scale was to long and the Vibramute I didn't dig every time I would use it the tunning would be flat or sharp until I would put it back in place it was very touchyyy and yes the guitar was set up for optimal playability, I did notice the same deal on Ralf Kilauea's Hallmark axe played it when they stayed with us in September of 06', his Hallmark is based on the same concept (Mosrite) designed by Mosrites partner or so I've heard? same deal I would use the Vibramute and here we go flat sharp chords after using the vibramute, I guess one has to become a custom to using the vibrato system on a Mosrite but I don't know it's just my personal experience, Mosrites do have their own vibe and tone a good guitar but not for me, The pickups almost remind me of a slash (Jazzmaster soap bar pickups/P-90s) most non Mosrite users have said that the sound is darker and that's what I heard in playing the 65 Mosrite yes they have as much power and output as Jaguar pickups but I can totally tell the difference that's why I don't preffer playing a Jazzmaster either long scale and the pickups excellent vibe though.
If the scale was like the Jaguar and vibramute didn't give me issues I would play it as much as my Jaguars , Just as the Jaguar isn't for others The Mosrite isn't for most players and hey that's everyones personal preference it's not a good or bad thing and I can dig that
With all do respect I have to ask (Mosrite users) why the change? from Jaguar or any other Fender to Mosrite, or using a Mosrite full time from their Jaugar or Jazzmaster
I see why Dr. Lehos of The Ghastly Ones preffers Mosrite the sound fits right in to what they are playing spook surf/garage/tean beat and killer tone
Dr. Lehos/Garret was telling me last October when we met up that he use to build his own Mosrites down to the pickups and made them to his specs
and his current sparkle red Mosrite is his Frankenstein Mosrite and built with no issues or tunning issues/Vibramute
Why do people get bothered or have issues by the scale of the Jaguar I mean the scale should make it an excellent fast neck or at least it's what most guitar players and Fender release notes from 1962 to present say yeah or neah
Myth or nonfiction
I have heard The Ventures did the endorsement deal with Mosrite to use his guitars exclusively in the 60s and after a few years do you think if The Ventures had their way would they have used other guitars live?
I know to this Day Nokie digs on the Mosrite design and plays a Mosrite style axe today.
