Kyle - Nice collection of Jaguars!
Thanks man I dig your guy's sound! Thunderchiefs go!!!! and dig on those blonde Fender rigs you guys have please fill us in on you rigs? that would be hot!!!
Thanks, Kyle. That blonde Showman rig is actually Joe Emery's - bass/ guitar player for the TChiefs (and formerly of Death Valley, Sir Finks, and currently in the Ugly Beats.) If I ask him real nice he'll bring it along to let me use from time to time. It's a '61 and a tone monster! I have a '65 Showman with a bassman cab loaded with a 15" JBL D-130F that's been my main rig for about 10 years or so. Shaun has a '65 Bandmaster that he plays through a mojotone cab with a 15" JBL.

Kyle,
Speaking for myself, I chose the Mosrite for the punch I got. From my experience, I was able to get a lot of up-front "booch" without losing the balance of my guitar sound. My Jag is the number two guitar in my stable, much for the same reason, and the fact that it's so damn comfortable.
As for the bridge, I've never had tuning issues on mine except for the occasional time when I'll give a sharp push downward on the trem arm, and it will bounce back up a bit far, and make everything go a bit sharp.
On a side note, there are some plans in the "pipeline" for the Lava Rats to swing northward. I'll hit you up via e-mail to see if we can work some stuff out.

Yeah, it'll be late Feb. at the very earliest.
You know us boys from San Fran complain about the cold when it hits 55.
Hell, we complain about the heat when it gets to be 85.
God bless the Bay Area...

I don't know why, but this thread - until now - has been completly overlooking the ultimate surf-axe ... the Minarik Inferno.
One fine surf instrument people! how on earth could we overlook this beautiful piece?

Man,
I remember seeing pics of Jimmy and Dick playing these pug-fugly axes at a recent NAMM, and I just couldn't believe it.
Now if only they offered it in ANTIGUA!!! Then it would resemble the projectile vomit that it inspires.

I saw them play these at the Glendale street scene car show 2 summers back. They sounded decent. as the have single coils.
but I couldn't help but think of Steve Vai when I looked at the guitars.

Although I initially voted "Other," for my Epiphone Les Paul Jr. 90 (with a Bigsby B5 added), I'll also go with Stratocaster, since I'll have one of those soon. The only thing holding up the works, in adding the Bigsby to my Epi is, I had a space cadet moment when ordering the Gibson upgrades from MF, and bought another stop bar tailpiece, when I need a bridge with the Bigsby. Oops! Anybody in the market for a nickel Gibson stop bar tailpiece?

I use a custom Tele made for me in '85 that sounds killer on the Duane Eddy stuff we do and a Fender Hwy1 Strat that i would sleep with if only my wife............anyway it's a neat guitar. Anyone else have a Hwy1? Guitars are so frickin' expensive now and of course i can't afford them cause i'm a musician!!! and don't get me started on Amps!!!!
So long,
RR

OK, to be honest, I'm not a very accomplished guitarist. I leared the three-chord songs of the late 60's early 70's back in, well, the late 60's and early 70's, but I always ALWAYS wanted to play surf instrumentals.
So now (coincidentally after my two kids are now old enough not to need constant care) I'm picking up the guitar again, and I'm trying to learn the surf guitar that I always wanted to learn. I can plunk away at a few tunes without too much embarrassment on my used MIJ Jaguar and used MIJ Jazzmaster, and I love them both.
HOWEVER, when I play (slowly) "Let's Go Trippin'" on the two guitars, I have REAL TROUBLE up on the 12th - 14th frets on the Jaguar; my fingers (I'm 6'2") are all clumped together on the Jag, so I gave my vote to the Jazzmaster.
But, really, I love them both, and I love that I'm now trying to play the songs I've been wanting to play for decades.

I vote 4 "the Jaguar"!!,looking so cool, and having it's own sound, fat or thin depends from you sometimes, but always "the tone"!
I like jazzmaster too-in the way they are similar to strat. on western tunes or bass note mostly and 4 his long scale.
I owned 6 strato and never been satisfied 4 surf-but this is a personal fact-I love Ivan's strat a lot-but taking apart the Atlantics-chantays -and few others-don't like those strat sounds that much,....but I'm getting another strat 62 to play Shadows hits.
a dream-the Mosrite ventures model, can't tell no technical about just say "a wonderful guitar"
Love most in a surf guitar a particular -no common -shape and a outstanding tune.

I've been thinking about getting a Jazzmaster but I really can't get the money together right now and I've been really iching for a 50s sunburst Statocaster ala Bobby Fuller, but again I can't get the money together so I'm still a 100% Jaguar man for the time being.
The thing that I really like about the Jaguar is that I can put 12 gauge flats on it which give that heavy thuddy warm sound and because it has the shorter scale it makes those 12s feel like 10s or 11s on a Stratocaster or Jazzmaster. So you can really play the heavy double picked surf and still play pretty good traditional rock n'rollish lead guitar. I think the only negative would be that it doesn't sustain too well when playing those leads and I'm talking more primative Chuck Berry, Scotty Moore or James Burton inspired leads. I probably couldn't get away playing like Jimmy Page or one of those guys.

Bill, wait for the right Jazzmaster. I am really happy with mine although I'm not a huge fan of the AV ones in comparison.
I agree 100% about slapping the 12s on the Jag. I have to use 11s on the Jazzmaster.

Has anyone here had a first-hand experience with the Dipinto Mark IV? I'm wondering how "surf-tone-worthy" it is....
