Oh to live on the West Coast...you are some lucky folks. I had to travel to Italy to see some surf bands.

I'm back playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

We have a ZZ Top cover band coming to Akron this summer. That should be pretty cool don't you think? Laughing

I think the correct response to the ZZTop cover band appearance is "A how how how".

Another epic show at Winters' Tavern last night. A full house of enthusiastic surf-into fans enjoyed a rocking' set from Freak Accident. I had never heard of this band before but they impressed me with a well-played set of instrumentals, sounding something like U2 with a surf beat. Powerful, and welcomely different.

Frankie & the Pool Boys blew the doors down with a great set of originals, with an occasional mixed-in cover. There were a number of great new tunes. the ace (from the fabulous Deadbeats) rhythm section of Abe Aguilar & Jonathan Rodriguez were rock solid, behind the terrific front line of Amber Waves (keys), Jono Jones (guitar), and Frankie. (Side note: Abe's vintage Kay bass sounded fantastic.) Of the many Frankie & the Pool Boys shows that I've seen, it was one of the best, and most high energy, sets I've seen them play.

The Insect Surfers are as good as it gets, for me. Despite having to play with two "ringers" Wink , the Insects played like they'd been playing together for decades. Martyn Jones filled in, as he has for the last few Insect trips to NorCal, and never missed a beat. Absolutely stellar. And Eric Penna (the Trabants) did his psychedelic rock thing to perfection. Eric was incredible. Jon-Paul Balak laid down the bottom end, and played like his life depended on it. His rig sounded fabulous. What can I say about visionary head-Insect, David Arnson? On fire from start to finish, he rocked and entertained like there was no tomorrow. They played a great set of Insect chestnuts, mixed with newer tunes from their fab newest CD, "Infra Green". They wrapped it up about 1am. Bliss!

There were a number of SG101 members, and usual NorCal surf fans, in attendance. It seemed like there were more young people and folks I hadn't seen before. Many of them were on the dance floor, dancing and really getting into the bands all night. It was nice to see somewhat of a demographic shift.

The Insect Surfers are playing at the Pier 23 Cafe in S.F. tonight, and at Forbidden Island, in Alameda, tomorrow afternoon. Bay area peeps, don't miss them. It'll be another year before they come North.

Special thanks to David Greenfield, CJ & Winters Tavern, Pier 23, Michael Thanos and Forbidden Island and all those that made it out to one (or more) of the shows this weekend! We had a blast and it was so great to see everyone again! Hopefully we can continue to make this at least an annual tradition! Extra special thanks to Eric Penna of The Trabants and Martyn of The Mermen for doing an absolutely incredible job! Headbang
