Merle Haggard passed away yesterday on his 79th birthday. One of the greatest artists country music will ever know.
I hated country music as a kid and didn't learn to appreciate it until I started hanging out in dive bars in my 20's with all classics on jukeboxes.
I believe he released about 70 albums.

Yeah, I came to country music late via Gram Parsons era Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers, who did a few Haggard covers.
Amazed at his output.

Merle - Legend
Did a few shows with him back in the 90's while I was working for another artist.
The real deal as an artist and a man.

I grew up in the deep South. I never sought out country music, but it was everywhere, like the air. I was always drawn to rock, but I had to work at it to find any on the radio between all the C&W stations. But despite my overall disregard for it, country music had a subliminal influence that I came to appreciate later in life. Suddenly hearing a classic country song would trigger unexpected waves of nostalgia and conjure up images of places, family, and friends. In time it became a feeling I would actively seek and I came to own a small collection of country artist greatest hits.
So, now another country legend is gone. Merle Haggard was one of the select few I included in my small country collection. "Momma Tried" and "If we make it through December" will always take me back home. The others in no particular order:
George Jones (I once sold George a Hi-Fi stereo system, but that is a tale for another time.)
Johnny Cash
Hank Williams Sr. (HW Jr. almost ran me down in his limo, another tale...)
Waylon Jennings
Willie Nelson (everybody should hear the Red Headed Stranger album at least once)
Marty Robbins
Looks like Willie is the only one left. Well, that's enough Ubi Sunt for today.
