I just returned from a diner party and discovered the system was looping Hour 4 of the European list for the third time. I am always there when we do these lists to monitor everything. This is the first time I could not be there all the time and Murpy strikes. Really upset about this guys, really sorry. It should play correctly now for the coming four hours. aaarrrggghhhhh Dead Reverb

GREAT job, Niels! A bummer about the technical gremlins, but what can you do, shit happens! However, I was tuned in to all 12 hours!! And GREATLY enjoyed it! It's an immense honor to have our music included among so many incredible songs. BIG congratulations to the grand winner Slacktone, as well as all the other fantastic bands that were ranked! We can point to these lists to anybody that doesn't know anything about modern surf music and say, check THIS out - you're gonna like this! Smile

One quick thing: it struck me that there is one song that was included in the lists twice: Tailspin! Both in its original version by Los Straitjackets, where it reached #8, and as covered by Jon & the Nightriders, where it reached #66! That is very cool! It certainly is an amazing song, my personal favorite by Los Straits!

Anyway, thanks again for all your work! Deeply appreciated! Thumbs Up

Some stats and facts;

Our main goal with these two dedicated lists was to give tracks that never made it into the Surf Revival Top 101 a chance to enter a Top 101 countdown and thereby giving more bands a chance to make it into a countdown list at North Sea Surf Radio. Judging by the numbers of artists that has really paid off.

In the Surf Revival Top 101 there were 56 entries by 22 American artists and 35 entries by 23 European artists. The American Top 101 has 37 different artists featured and the European Top 101 has 50 different artists. That means a total of 42 artists could be heard that have not had any entries in the Surf Revival Top 101.

The European Top 101 has 25 artists with 1 entry in the list while the American Top 101 has 17 artists with 1 entry.

Highest three entries of an artist with only one track in the countdown;

American Top 101
number 24 Pollo Del Mar - "A Flash of Green"
number 27 The Surf Raiders - "Point Conception 63"
number 32 The Infrareds - The Red Scare

European Top 101
number 2 The Barbwires - "La Caja del Muerto"
number 7 The Space Rangers - "Mr. Lou"
number 20 The Tremolo Beer Gut - "Delirium Tremolo"

Bands with most entries

American Top 101;
10 - Satan´s Pilgrims
9 - The Space Cossacks
7 - Jon & The Nightriders / Slacktone / The Madeira

European Top 101;
7 - The Treble Spankers
6 - The Bambi Molesters
5 - The Kilaueas

Number of tracks per decade:

Decade - American - European
80´s - 1 - 8
90´s - 23 - 59
00´s - 35 - 24
10´s* - 42 - 10

  • The current decade only covers a timespan of little over 6 years.

It´s very interesting to see that the highlight of American Surf Music was in the 90´s with 59 tracks while in Europe it is in the current decade. 42 for the past 6 years would be 70 for a full decade.

Years with most entries:

American Top 101
14 from 1998
11 from 1996
10 from 2000

European Top 101
14 from 2013
9 from 2014
6 from 2012

I hope you all enjoyed the list and meanwhile encourage you all to vote for our new countdown list; The Artist Top 101 over HERE

For all of you in North and South America that have missed the American and European Top 101 we will rerun both lists cut up in 3 hour blocks every evening.

This time around the hours won´t be alternating but we will have two American evenings and two European evenings. So tune in and enjoy!

Thanks to all who voted for SP. Wow! I don't know what to say, especially surrounded by others with so much talent and dedication. Congratulations to Ivan, John Blair and everyone else that was recognized by this countdown.

I figured it was time to give the NSSR Revival Artist Top 101 vote a bump. Does anyone know the last day to vote?

Have I mentioned that I love these lists? I miss seeing who people are voting for since the move to Google, so here's my list.

  1. The Penetrators - Coolest surf band ever. They had the complete package: Sound, Style, Image, Theme. This little band from Alabama had a giant impact on the Atlanta surf scene.
  2. The Space Cossacks - Come on, it's Ivan! Great, great music.
  3. Los Straitjackets - Some may quibble they aren't surf, but the vote still counts.
  4. Man Or Astro Man? - Who would have thought a band from landlocked Auburn Alabama would have such a global impact on surf music?
  5. Jon & The Nightriders - From the dawn of the surf revival, they got things started right. And John Blair is probably THE official historian for surf music, classic and revival.
  6. The Bambi Molesters - The name freaked me out, but you can call yourself whatever you like if you sound this good.
  7. Laika & the Cosmonauts - "Cosmopolis" gets frequent play.
  8. Satan's Pilgrims - American Top 101 track domination!
  9. The Fathoms - One of the first revival bands I ever heard and still a favorite.
  10. Daikaiju - Avant garde sound and show!! From Huntsville Alabama?? Am I beginning to show a regional bias? So be it. Alabama has produced some damn fine surf bands.
  11. The Insect Surfers - I just like 'em...
  12. The Mystery Men? - A hometown favorite that deserves wider recognition. Check out "Sonos Delirium".
  13. The Surge! - I've listened to "Dam! (Another Release)" a lot. It really stands up to all competition. Each of the 12 traditional-surf flavored jewels on this disc shine.
  14. Messer Chups - A guilty pleasure? Sure, but not too guilty - they sound as good as Zombierella looks.
  15. Los Twang! Marvels - "Sea of Glory" & Alex Anthony Faide - 'nuff said.

I've interpreted "Artist" as "Band". If we are considering "Artist" as "Individual Contributor" to the genre across multiple bands, then I would include Ferenc Dobronyi and Ivan Pongracic (although I've sort of got Ivan covered with my vote for The Space Cossacks. What's that Ivan? You want me to vote for The Madeira, too? Don't be greedy.)
