I'll definitely have to try that combo and see if it gets me close.

When I saw AO here in Atlanta at the Masquerade some years back Mike was playing a Jazzmaster (modified, I believe) out a a Marshall with a slant cab.

They were smoking'

ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Here is what Mike Palm replied with.

"PAF pickup in an SG, through an old Fender Bassman head, into a vintage 8x10 Marshall slant cab."

Regarding the phase sound, I asked if that was post production."

"No, that's called phase problems with the mics"

Just left him a message on Facebook. We have talked here and there for a few years now.

But the gist of your question is that the "tone" you are wanting was actually the result of some pretty crappy engineering. LOL

But it could be worse. Have you ever heard their 2nd album? LOL

Haha thats awesome i've friended mike and been waiting for him to accept forever but it probably wont ever happen sadly id love to talk to the guy but im happy we got to the bottom of this its awesome to hear it from him himself!

He and I don't know each other beyond a few back and forths here and there. I actually had developed a pretty good relationship with the old bass player, James, before he passed away in 2014. He did a bit of publicity work for us. It was really great to hear all the old stories directly from him, as they were one of my earliest influences. Sadly, he and Mike had not been on speaking terms for ages.

really I never knew they had a falling out thats sad to hear. Agent Orange was the reason I started a surf punk band to begin with I wish I could get my music to him somehow!

I also listened to your band I love man or astro man so im automatically in love with it great stuff

I saw Agent orange play in the UK about 5 years ago, and they were awesome. They are also the reason I started playing surf music, and the first surf punk band I ever heard back in the day. One of my all time favourite bands.

They play and tour quite a bit so I would recommend making the effort to go see them, I don't know where you live or what you do, but it's always easier for a fan to travel to the band rather than the band travel to the fan!

When I saw them, Mike finished the gig, picked up a bottle of beer then jumped down into the audience to say hello to everyone. Then he went to a local bar and had a few beers. What I'm saying is, he's not some big ego rock star - go see the band, meet him after, have a chat and ask him what he plays. Not only will you find out what he plays but you'll have great experience as well. Alternatively you could track down Dusty Watson on facebook and ask when & where they are playing - Dusty often plays drums for them and he's a very cool guy.

When I saw them play, I didn't recognise his guitar or his amp. I think he was being sponsored by some amp brand - it wasn't marshall.

I always thought he used a fuzzed up harmoniser on his songs, but I could be wrong - I'm not big into effects.

Dusty isn't really playing with them these days. Dave Klein, formerly of Ghastly Ones, is handling drums now.
