Permalink The Dobner Jakuar: Mark II

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Next

So, I have embarked on another journey. Right now, I am accumulating pieces and this thread shall serve as the chronicle of the next Dobner Jakuar.

This one will be a solid body Jaguar, in Plain Jane alder. I debated Mahogany or Korina... or basswood... or ash... or pine. But going with the tried and true alder. I decided that I will let tone cap values differentiate my guitars.

The specs will be...
- 1966 Musicmaster Neck
- Vintage vibrato
- Parchment pickguard
- '65 Pure Vintage Pickups(my favorite)
- Wronski switch plate
- Staytrem bridge(although I prefer the Mastery bridge, the Staytrem will likely go on my original Dobner Jakuar and the Mastery will port over to this build).
- No rhythm circuit(potentially some day pop a hi-pass filter in there)
- 4-way tele switch w/solid metal tele switch from Staytrem(versus the chrome plated plastic or black plastic)
- Shell pink finish w/matching headstock(I determined the headstock logo was destroyed enough to remove)
- I may put my spare '58-'60 Jazzmaster bridge thimbles on it.
- Probably going to go with a .33 tone cap
- 1M tone and volume pots
- Treble bleed

Eventually, I may duplicate my Sherwood Jag rhythm circuit(which isn't a rhythm circuit, but a hi-pass filter and Esquire tone circuit).

Here is a thread on the original Jakuar: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/25282/

Sounds like a cool build, except for the shell pink (barf!!!). But to each his own Big Razz

Looking forward to your progress!

Once upon a time I wouldn't have hated Shell Pink and gone with any of the metallic colors. Nowadays, I kind of like light pink.

What scale neck?

Shell Pink - I just sold this a few months back and I miss it much.
Not an offset but certainly Shell Pink

Oh man... Nice! You custom mix, i presume?

I was going to try Graceys aerosol cans in shell pink and then use some amber clear if it is too bubblegum pink. I would love to mix my own, as I dont want it too 'pink. But I dont have the equipment, nor the ability(which I would learn).

As good as it can be on a website, theirs looks very much like the real '56 DeSoto color (Dupont 21108, vs. the brighter piece of Bazooka bubble-gum some have out there. I'm sure you have the various mfr cross-refs for that color if you want to mix your own. (I have a file with all the colors with their numbers & cars associated if you don't.)

Shell pink is sweet! That's going to be a great project! For some reason I really like shell pink relic'd more so than other colors. Have fun! Nice Tele Too!

Jake,
That was custom mixed but I once used the Reranch Pink on a Teisco that I was rebuilding for an artist/friend.
I didn't have a lot of time so I used the Reranch and it worked well.
An important aspect to some of these colors is using a colored undercoat.
I always use a white undercoat first when shooting Shell Pink.
If you're using rattle cans a simple automotive, white touch up paint will work, it's acrylic lacquer.
The white undercoat will keep the color from becoming too vibrant.
Also - you are correct about a tint overcoat mellowing the pink out.
We use a slight tint overcoat almost always when we shoot Shell Pink.
It instantly mutes the color some.
Just be careful as if you use too much the color changes to almost Salmon - which is sometimes cool as well.

Hope that helps,

Jeff

Yeah, I was planning on the white primer coat. Does nitro lacquer sit well on top of acryclic lacquer?

I've always had a soft spot for shell pink guitars Jake. Can't wait to see the finished result!

Either you surf, or you fight.

Update, and final product.
