The Blue Demons Review By Noel

image

The Blue Demons describe themselves as a Punk/Surf/Garage trio from parts unknown, but they seem to be from Toronto, Canada. As for the Punk/Garage thing, they play Pre-Surf Instro and First-Wave Surf music with very high intensity and lots of drive; lots of overdrive, too. You say you like Link Wray and The Gamblers, The Pyramids and Eddie & the Showmen? They play ‘em hard and fast. This is eminently danceable Surf with attitude. And they take liberties! These guys sure ain’t The Ventures.

They have a self-titled blue-vinyl .45 from 2012 with two songs on it, “Cougar Country” and “Beatnik Bandit”, which are also on the thirteen-track self-titled CD that came out recently.

I thoroughly enjoy almost all the songs on these records. I haven’t decided, just for myself anyway, if “Baja” and “Apache” lend themselves to the Demons’ urgent sound and feel. You may like then a lot. I believe all the other songs work really well. Two highlights for me are the extended 6:24 minute “Jack the Ripper” followed immediately by the 5:01 minute hard rockin’ tribute to one of my favorite Spaghetti Westerns called, “Well Hung”.

If you’re the impressionable sort, I don’t recommend driving while listening to The Blue Demons; you’re liable to get a very expensive speeding ticket. But I do recommend playing these records very, very loud. Oh, just go ahead and turn your stereo all the way up. You’ll hear what I mean. Lots of fun!
