Permalink Monthly Atlanta surf show: Southern Surf Stomp!

I'm still coming down from last night. It was truly an incredible evening. Well over a hundred enthusiastic music fans were in attendance, El Cap and Flat Cat showed everyone a killer time, and even with a drummer that had not played with them before that day Crazy Aces once again proved why they are currently one of the greatest instrumental groups in the world. Not only did I get to perform with one of my favorite bands last night, but when they handed me my very own Teisco I was completely shocked!

Photos and video should be up fairly soon.

It was great to meet Dave (DesignSpy) and hang out with my wonderful friends in the greatest music scene in the world.

Badger, don't forget about the scene down in Austin. They've got a TON of great bands as well as their own monthly surf show.

You always do up some great art; I've been collecting your playbills under a folder I call "Stomp Art" Laughing

Edit: That's a very cool lookin' Teisco there; not to mention the very clean & slick lookin' Vibro Champ.

The highlight of the evening for me was after Chad sat in with The Crazy Aces on "Stomp" a song written by Jeff Senn as a tribute to the Southern Surf Stomp, Jeff presented Chad with his very own Teisco guitar, and it is a beauty. Chad immediately took off his Strat and rocked out on another song with the Aces with his new acquisition.

AWESOME! Totally Deserved Yes

Heading back up for the Stomp this weekend. Hurry up and get here Saturday!

Great to hear, David!

I really enjoy watching those after action videos. Who else does something like that? It's a really nice personal touch and I'm sure it takes quite a bit of effort.

Thanks so much Brian! I have the process pretty worked out these days, so it's not a terrible effort anymore. Even at it's most challenging, I find it a fun recap of the event and a great creative challenge that I enjoy doing!

Want to live at The Southern Surf Stomp.
Move right in
and stay!

Cheers,
Jeff

Once again Chad put on a KILLER Stomp! I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 bands and hanging out with some of the Atlanta gang. What a great group of guys! I'm counting down the days until the next one!

I heard from a little Birdy, that Jeremy is back in the Aqualads.

I don't have time to do a lengthy report, but The Aqualads are stronger than ever! They were marvelous and it was like Jeremy never left. The new material is great and I believe we can expect an album from them soon.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Genki Genki Panic, but I am also a sucker for horror surf. A few choice vocals (done really well by their drummer) and a really full sound for a two piece. I hope they can fill out the band and keep developing it (if they want to).

Last night was a lot of fun. As Richard says, the 'lads were in top form and it was really great to see Jeremy back in the fold and have the band back to Atlanta. They played for a smaller but enthusiastic crowd but you could tell they had a great time and played a predominantly faster set. Genki Genki Panic were a hoot. They wore lucha libre masks and really did have a big sound. One of the vocal tunes they did was Devo's "Girl U Want", and a killer rendition at that. The drummer really had a great voice for it.

Next month is, I believe, bound to be our biggest show yet.

Eddie will be performing some of his greatest hits from Los Straitjackets (of course), his solo material, The Neanderthals, and The Panasonics backed by Trace and Sticks of the Penetrators, and Richard of The Mystery Men?. The Penetrators tribute will feature a veritable who's who from the Southern Surf Syndicate including members from The Surge!, The Mystery Men?, and El Capitan and the Band With No Name. Not only that, but we're going to be doing a "Pipeline" jam in honor of Brian Carmen, a fantastic idea from the one and only Eddie Katcher!

Southern Surf Stomp!

Thanks for the kind words Richard and Chad! And it's great to be back in the 'Lads! The Stomp was a lot of fun and it's always awesome to see good friends again. Chad and his excellent musician friends did a sweet loud and raucous Motorhead Tribute band to open things up. The guitar playing, vocals and drumming were just spot on! Excellent way to open the night. Then Genki Genki Panic played some excellent Monster Surf with Luchador Masks on. I think the guitarist had an octaver pedal set to the bass register so things sounded huge and the playing was very articulate with some excellent monster riffs ala The Pilgrims and the Ghastlys. They also had a few vocal tunes thrown in which were very well done. Again I kept having to scan the stage see if Chad had plugged in to an amp and was playing along because it just sounded way more full than I thought a 2 piece ever could!! Yes

So after they finished we got started setting up, my Dual Showman (thanks Mike Krause!) with a 1x15" JBl D-130 and Tone Ring Cab and my trusty reissue reverb tank was sounding fine until I clicked on my Super Hard On ZVEX pedal then BLAM! My trusty reverb tank turned into my not-so-trusty reverb tank. Somehow the guitar sound was coming out but no reverb sound accompanying it. So Chad had to loan me his new reverb tank he just acquired, which sounded way better anyway! Thanks Chad! I felt like the set went really well and I can really tell the difference that studying with Alex from Los Twang has provided for me, he is such an amazing master instructor and if you want good guitar instruction for an obscenely low price please contact him on Skype via the Guitar Instructions Link to the left. You'll never regret it!

We got to the end of our set and had Chad come up to play Cat on a Hot Foam Board with us in honor of Jimmy Greenspoon(Jimmy personally called our Jimmy in 1996 and said we could cover his song but that we had to include the "Yell" at the beginning, what a great guy!). Well, we forgot to tell Chad that we play it in E (Because playing it in F sucks), so Chad had to do some on-the-spot transposing that he did quite well! Then Chad joined us for some Hotbox as well! Rock

All in all it was a great night and we had an awesome time at Kavarna once again. I'm sincerely hoping I can make it down for the Eddie Angel show as Chad turns up the heat even more! Great stuff and congratulations Chad on such an awesome endeavor!

Jeremy
